Just got off the phone with cakewalk support.  Seems like there is a solution to this problem: before entering lyrics to a track, bounce the track to one clip!...

Hey!  That sounds good, I'm betting it fixes the problem.  Like maybe it was sometimes when going from one clip to another that Sonar was hiccuping, with those random notes being inserted.  Sounds good to me - Will be taking a look myself.  Thanks!
