Ever wonder?

Do you ever wonder what the face behind the voice looks like?

I got a flip camera, and some video editing software and threw this video  together.

It's a country song called "That Ought to Count for Something" that I recorded again recently (after a rewrite) I recently posted the song.

well.... this is the video Here

and yeah, I recorded the vox track just like you see in the first part.... hand held, no pop filter, and close up.

It was kind of fun to put this together, and there's a bit to learn yet with video.

lol, looks kinda funny holding a big condenser like that. Great song, mix sounds great over here too. Just great all around classic country. I grew up on this type of material, You make it look easy, which it's not.

Shades of Willy. But that acoustic is way to pretty.
Ah, there's the famous SG in action.
    Fun stuff, Herb.
Yeah, video has a curve all its own. Try playing with some crossfades. A basic technique that I think you'll like, and easy to do. Hard cuts have their place, too, so mix and match.
And, yes, it is pretty cool to actually see you doing your thing.

Yeah I appreciate the comments... video is a whole different animal... fun, like I said and yeah, it takes time to learn.... heck it took quite a bit of time just to throw this "simple" video together......

I'm working on a second one with an older song.... right now just looking for the photo's I need. Such a pain with photo copyrights these days with the enforcement going on. Some company buys all the news outlets photo's and then hires people to scan the net looking for unlicensed photos, then they send you a huge honking bill with a threat of legal action..... $50k plus.... but they will settle for a few thousand... so it's hard to get the foto's I want but I'm finding them slowly..... do you know how hard it is to find someone who still admits to voting for Obama and has a car with an Obama bumper sticker these days? No that's not a political thing.... I'm working on my song Hope & Change which is a political POV song.... with a new video for it.

Hopefully coming soon to a YOU TUBE near you. I'll keep you informed, by golly!

    Good job Herb !

Puting a video together can be a pain.  It is fun and I like seeing the performace.
I have done a few youtube videos for a band called The Tribe.   It was a real
    learning experience, that's for sure.

Herb - that was really cool.  Not only a great performance, but the video adds such a great dimension to the performance.  I do wonder and seeing you perform it makes a big impact.  You did a great job.  More and more people are doing this now.  I've been thinking about doing video also.  What do you think the percentage of time you spent on the video verses the audio?

Geno, I spent maybe 6 to 8 hours total on the video... (max). I'm a flaming noob on the video end, and it's really not my intention to become a video producer. I'd rather concentrate on the music, and have a simple video. That was the first video I have done with this particular software package. Honestech Video Editor 8.0 (inexpensive)

The music was definitely more involved. Not counting the time to write the song, record it the first time, rewrite it, record the vox again and tweeze the mix, easily two weeks over a period of many months.

Speaking of which, I was listening to an oldies station today and heard a song that sounded EXACTLY like one you and I did a long time ago.  Can't remember the name of it.  Only when the 'chorus' came (it was in instrumental) did it change and I knew they didn't steal our song.

Me too.  I'll have to check that station to see if they have a play-list.  And I'll check our collabs.  I guess there were only 3 or 4.  Can't remember.

From never opening a video app before, I spent about 2 weeks on and off learning and using Sony Vegas, It was fun and frustrating at the same time..

When all was said and done, I think just making our first vid, inspired us musically, more than anything we had done in a while.

    and quite addictive!

    Herb, wonderful song, very Willie!

Only thing i was a little disappointed in was seeing you obliviously reading the lyrics, maybe try to get em down pat for the next vid!

    Re:Ever wonder? 2011/08/13 08:37:47 (permalink)
One Reason... yeah... guilty on reading the lyrics.

What happened there was I had just finished a rewrite of that part... and every time I went to sing it, I was screwing something up.... singing the old lyrics or forgetting the next "new line" ...so yeah... lay the lyrics on the desk and sing it right.

You can tell by the shirt.. the first grey T-shirt was on day one of recording...... then the tan w/writing was after the rewrite and fixing some things in the old part at the end.

If the recording has an extra syllable in it, the video better match. So there were a few parts in the end that needed to be redone for accuracy.

There are a number of "issues" with this video, but ...... it was the first one and perhaps on the next one I'll be able to do it so much better.... maybe not. BUt yeah, I'll try to be aware of so obviously reading the lyrics.

Thanks for the comments and insight.

That's nicely done Herb, good vid. The lighting is really clear, did you use anything special for that?

Not my cuppa tea musically & lyrically, although the genre is very popular in this corner of Scotland. You've certainly got a knack for writing (and singing) a memorable tune in the style, I could see this being successful, nice work.

BTW - if it's any consolation, you're way better looking than me..

Very nicely done, Herb.  Loved your vocal sound on this: a definite Willy vibe but unique enough to make it yours.  Great tune, great mix... Great Job!

Almost forgot- Nice job on the vid too.  It lent a sense of intimacy and warmth.

Janet... Sept nites was ours but not the 50 song....

Yes it was my SG  (1969) The acoustic was my old Ibanez

...and the light was from my under counter florescent and a 60w incandescent that lights up the gear on the shelves, and what ever the computer monitor gives off.....

the camera was a Flip Video....HD video I think is what it claims.

Are you sure about that?  I know Mark and I did one for our 50 b'days, but I didn't think it was this one.  And it sounds like you on the 50 song.  If it's not, I want to give credit where credit is due.  I think we did these 6:

    Friends
    Storm in Me
    September Nights
    Nifty Fifty
    When I Met You
    Rising Up
