bitflipper This does not include all the records I heard first on acid. Those are electrochemically seared into my brain, but aren't necessarily the greatest works of art (e.g. the first Sabbath song I ever heard was "Iron Man", while peaking on blotter and staring at a pizza and wondering why I had ordered it and what I was going to do with it). Ah, but who hasn't had that exact same moment? I once had a friend of a roommate who just didn't get Classical music. Since I was starting to do lighting for underground clubs (and he was partaking some fungi at the time) I put him in a room with surround sound, two subwoofers, colored lasers making patterns on the ceiling and Bach's Tocata and Fugue in D minor pumping out at a high volume. Instant convert.
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

57Gregy bapu 1974 Mars Hall * * sorry for poor cassette to digital transfer. The tape was played about 1,893,652.86239697 times. Cool stuff, Ed. Punk before Punk was a genre. Quality is much better than my earliest surviving recordings from 1979. I liked the "tape is rolling" at the beginning of I Knew That I Knew it. , reminding everyone that time is money. Yeah. This was 1974. We booked the studio (Ampex 4 track, EV Voice of The Theater play back monitors) for $10/hour. We booked 10 hours. The band had pooled exactly $100. We went 11.5 hours and my (then) wife had to come up with the other $15. Aaaaaahaaaaaa. Maybe that's why she "took me to the cleaners" 10 years later when we divorced.

Was it the drugs in general, the drugs listeners took or the drugs musicians took. Whenever I get a mental image of listening to a new album in the 70's there's always some sort of substance in the picture as well. Perhaps that's why so many from that time aren't with us any more.

I always thought Homer's quote was referring to We're An American Band by Grand Funk. I looked (yes, I have that LP [gold vinyl]) and it was released in '73. So, loyal Simpsons viewers, what band or album caused Homer to say that?

SteveStrummerUK Perhaps 'Sonic Youth' or 'Nine Inch Nails'? Neither of them were around in 1974- maybe Styx - Man of Miracles was released in 1974. It's not an album I am familiar with. I would not be at all surprised if these still were not from the episode containing the quote, Homer looks a bit perplexed at the posters for newer bands.

I would not be at all surprised if these still were not from the episode containing the quote, Homer looks a bit perplexed at the posters for newer bands. Those screenshots are from that episode ('Homerpalooza') Glyn. Homer goes into his once favourite record store ('Suicide Notes' formerly 'Good Vibrations') and asked the assistant "Where can I find the latest releases by Bread?" - he is then directed to the "Oldies" section. Homer starts flicking through the LP's and remarks "Oldies? But you've got all the top bands in here... Styx? But I just heard them on the King Biscuit Flower Hour". He then looks up at the posters on the wall (as in my second screenshot) and says "Now here are some of your no-name bands... Sonic Youth... Nine Inch Nails..." After briefly discussing music festivals with the assistant, he leaves the store and walks dejectedly up the street. He then utters to himself the immortal line "Why do you need new bands? Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974.... it's a scientific fact". So my answer to Greg was that either he came up with the line in response to being dismayed that 'Bread' and 'Styx' were to be found in the 'Oldies' section, or that he was referencing Sonic Youth and NIN in the "Why do you need new bands" part of the full quote.

SteveStrummerUK Those screenshots are from that episode ('Homerpalooza') Glyn. . Thanks, Just found it on Imdb http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0701127/quotes Other classic quotes. Marge: Music is none of my business. Homer: Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft. Peter Frampton: You're damn right I'll be pissed, I bought that pig at Pink Floyd's yard sale! Bart: Making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel. Middle-aged Grampa: I used to be with it, but then they changed what *it* was. Now what I'm with isn't *it*, and what's *it* seems weird and scary to me. It'll happen to you...
