Expand / Collapse Track Folders in Console View

I use H, Track Manager, to select and show/hide tracks all the time. That's a great control.

Even if I've hidden tracks I'm not using presently, I still can get too many tracks to conveniently look at in the Console View.

It would be neat if I could open up a folder in Console View to look at my guitar tracks, and then collapse the folder like in Track View.

Then in Console View I could open say a folder of keyboard tracks and look at those for mixing.

I'd just like to have less left to right scrolling in the Console View (I already use narrow strips).

I also like to see the buses, so screen real estate gets taken up.

That's why expand / collapse Track Folders as an option in Console View would be useful to me.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

If your on the mobile version, you won't see how to vote. So if you only ever look at this forum on a mobile device you wouldn't know that the option to vote would be there.

In the regular version of the forum there is a thumbs up/down on the right side of each post in the thread. So you can vote on the original idea AND the follow up posts too!! It's really sweet.

Lets the devs know what we really think!!

It really is time for collapsable Console View folders if at all possible 2015/05/31 15:03:59 (permalink)
+16 (16)
I know there are probably a dozen requests for this already but being able to sort Console Strips into folders that can be collapsed/expanded with one click would be a massive improvement. Even if we just start with tying Console View strips to folders created in the Track View. It is really quite problematic scrolling through reams of strips (like the outputs of a synth like AD2) all the time and using the Track Manager or the other options to show/hide strips isn't very practical.

Very simple. If the track is in a folder in the Track View it has a button in the Console to collapse it along with all tracks in the same folder. They collapse into a little strip with a button to expand it and maybe some simple data/controls just like TV folders.

Ideally I'd like to see it customizable independent of the Track View (but by default linked to the TV). However just being able to show/hide stuff like we do in the TV within the CV would be great.

Just posting this because I think there are many others who want this and I know the Bakers poke around here looking for stuff to twiddle with.

Thanks.

My reference is how it's made in Reaper - any track folder also have a bus integrated to use or not if you want(children can send to parent or not).
And the same is available in console/mixer view - expand/collapse in place - the folder bus is there too.

And since track folders also are allowed inside another folder, nested - you can get really well organized.
In principle having top level of tracks be as 8-10 stems, or so.

Current routing become pretty much like spaghetti for larger projects. You can do everything you want, just about, but keeping it organized is not so easy.

Maybe nested folders is a biggy, but on first level getting track folder in console - what a boost...

It seems it just should be automatic... when I add a track in track view it appears in console... should be same for folders... It really is challenging to scroll around... love this idea.

I had posted this over in the other thread requesting CV folders ...

Collapsing mixer channels based on folders would be great (although I doubt this would work with the VS-700 but hey we are officially legacy!)

I'd like to suggest an option where collapsed folder/channels don't fully disappear but become so narrow that all controls are gone, but the LED meter remains to keep seeing levels ...

side effect: cake could add this as a "very narrow" channel view (to allow this view for individual channels) so you could also set up a meter bridge with all channels in a screen set (I know you already can do but with faders requiring larger screen estate) ...

Console-view follows track-view and vicaversa. Tracks in minimized folders hidden or as FreeFlyBertl suggests optionally just showing metering as 'ultra-narrow' mode. Seems like it should be that way. Logical workflow.

Further idea(s), not quite sure about the practicability though:
a) Auto-zoom mode for the Console-view. In focus track is wide the others are either narrow or 'ultra-narrow'
b) 'Bus-follow-expand' mode. -> All channels hidden except for the focused Bus -> it's channels are visible.

Folders idea is in any case voted!!

Glad I found this thread.

I've been requesting this for almost 2 years now, since I started beta testing BFD3.

BFD3 has a similar feature in the mixer where by you can click on +/- buttons to show and hide each kit pieces sub channels.

This helps free up space in the mixer a lot and in truth there aren't normally more than 3 or 4 sub channels in each kit piece anyway so imagine how much more useful it would be in sonars mixer/console when an instrument like BFD3 can have 16 to 32 separate channels.

You could even group channels in sonar and hide/reveal those also. They should never be completely hidden (that's what the track manager is for) but should always have a single "master" channel on view.
This would have the +/- button on it to reveal it's subsidiary channels.

Very useful feature to have indeed. Especially with lots of tracks and buses. And to add to that, as we now have Aux tracks and patch point routings, it would be great to have folders in console view for better mix management. Its a 5 star vote from me ! Sorry accidentally clicked 3 star and not able to change that now.

H is a clugy frustrating hotkey... you can't rapidly scroll down to deliniate all the tracks to hide...it is SLOW and cumbersome...

Why isn't it implemented already??? mimiking the consol/track views should be easy.

I would luv... "show only data tracks" and "show all tracks linked to data tracks..." or call um "active tracks" or whatever...
but at minimum, folders in console view, based on track view would seem to be an easy fix

If not, it would be nice to know why not.

Collapsable Console Strips into Folders 2016/01/03 20:51:28 (permalink)

I didn't find (in my search) this specific feature, and it seems I may have suggested this back in X2, but...

Just as Tracks can be nested in Folders (Track View), I'd like to see a way where those same Track strips could be collapsed into Folders (Console View). But also, to allow the Folder "strips" to appear as a blank strip with perhaps the labeling in vertical text. See the attached pic below. This is an ugly example, but essentially the first strip is the "folder", which can collapse the other strips quickly vs relying solely on archiving or using the Track Manager. The folder strip could also be thinner, not affected by Strip width settings.

Click on the bottom black box of the strip to collapse or expand. If collapsed, the "L" would change to a "+", for example.

Again, this could be made much prettier, but it would certainly make console strip management, including those used by ProChannel users to save some serious real estate.

Yeah, I was rehashing an existing new idea. I KNEW it! ha. But yes, I routinely work on projects that contain more than 30 tracks, many times with upwards of 16 tracks, just for drums.

Something else to add: If you could collapse console strips into strip folders, think of adding an Expand All Pro-Channels on any strips not collapsed into a folder with one keystroke! So, Expand one Strip Folder, then hit the keystroke and voila, you now see all PC's for the un-collapsed strips, AND with real estate to spare!! When you collapse the strips again, the PC for each can be closed as well.

Another +1.  I would really love to have this feature.
