$$$Expert needed SonarX1 and Focusrite Mix Control
I have worked with computer DAWs for 20 Years. I am either getting too old for this or I have digressed to being incredibly stupid. My problem is using Focusrite Mix Control to assign inputs Mostly Audio (vocals) to the correct Sonar X1 record channels/Tracks I have 4 Inputs on the focusrite pro24 yet the only track selections that show up under Asio Saffire 8in 4 out are IP 1 Left, IP 1 Right, IP3 left input 3 right and Stereo IP1, Stereo IP3. Where are the input 2 and 4 tracks? All the ADAT,SPDIF, and Loop track inputs are there but I dont use them. Also I have trouble configuring the Focusrite Mix control 2.4 to give me the correct gain settings on the input record channels/tracks I have ahuge collection of Stereo backing tracks both Audio and Midi on my computer and I want them to be recorded on either one stereo track or two mono L and R , Then playback/monitor those tracks thru the headphones whilst recording the vocal. I am willing to pay good money to a real expert who can walk me thru this via phone or remote control of my computer. I can pay via credit card or Paypal. In order to do this you must be very familiar with Sonar X1 and Focusrite pro24 using Mix Control. Please Contact Jim Hochstadt 24/7 931-403-4065

I'm not totally following what you are saying but I'll take a crack at it. Your inputs are probably "chained" into stereo pairs. You can unchain them by clicking the blue button on the fader strips that look like a little chain link. Then in Sonar you should see the mono inputs. Also you should be setting up your routing in Sonar. Not on the Focusrite. For the input gain I'd use the actual trim knobs on the unit if possible. Aside from that the controls in MixControl do not affect input to the DAW. They only affect your monitor levels. You can get the manual for your device at Focusrite.com. It's pretty straightforward stuff. I just started using MixControl yesterday so I'm no expert though. Good luck.

Also your "2" and "4" channels aren't missing. They are just the right channel of the stereo pairs. If you plugged into input 1 and 2 they should both show up on channel 1. 1 would be Left and 2 would be Right. I'm saying this because if you are just inputting a stereo track you don't need to unchain the channels.

Also, you can just email Focusrite customer support. They are a great company for that. Might take a few days to get a reply but they do reply. There are also tons of blurbs about various topics on the "Answer Base" section of their website. http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/

@Karyn... I find that aspect of Sonar a little annoying. As a guitar player I'm used to using mono inputs and even though I know it's the exact same thing it just irks my brain having them paired up like that.

Hi Jim, MixControl does not have an effect on your inputs to Sonar X1 (aside from loopback). As suggested by Beepster and Karyn, Inputs 2 and 4 should show up as 1 right and 3 right respectively. If you are still having trouble setting up your Pro 24 with X1 and MixControl please fill out a ticket on the contact section of our answerbase found at: http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/ You can also reach us Monday-Friday from 8am-6pm Pacific time at (310) 322-5500.

Hahaha... see? What other company has their customer support actually come to YOU? That reminds me... I haven't registered my Scarlett yet. Good job, Matt. So far I'm very happy with my purchase. You guys might want to take the older driver out of the MixControl download though. That caused a little confusion. Cheers.

I am willing to pay good money to a real expert who can walk me thru this via phone or remote control of my computer. That would be a waste of money. This is how every soundcard works, although some number them differently. As others have said, essentially every input on a soundcard is mono. So 1 Left is Input 1, 1 Right is Input 2, 3 Left is Input 3, 3 Right is Input 4... and so on. For stereo, you would plug into Inputs 1 & 2 and select Stereo 1, or Inputs 3 & 4 and select Stereo 3. Its not all that difficult.

Jim and all, I wanted to post for anyone browsing that I've been using the Focusrite Scarlett with the MixControl very successfully with Sonar X1. I couldn't be happier with how easy it is to use and the sound quality. In case someone picked up from the initial post and the follow up that it was not ideal, I'm just confirming I'm super pleased with Focusrite.
Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Hi, lawajawa. I see from your specs you have an M-Audio device hooked up to the 18i6 to take advantage of the extra channels via the optical connection. I'm curious as to how difficult it was to get that set up and what kind of results you are getting. I have the 18i6 and thought I might be stuck purchasing their OctoPre interface if I wanted to expand without a mixer so if there are other options I'd love to explore them. Thanks.

Right I mean I will try to answer right. I mean! Ok. if you are using a Mic and you put the jack into the xlr socket at the front of your Saffire Pro, you have affectively put it into the left hand socket! In Sonar in the in/out when you depress it, it will show a list of options. This option is set to stereo. But sound will only come out through the left speaker. However if you set it to left then you will get stereo sound. reason being you are using the left socket of the saffire pro for your mic! That's it! Voila!

On my Saffire LS56 (same mix control) and X1, My inputs are listed as : Left IP1 Right IP1 Stereo IP1 I too was like huh? at first. Then it made sense. These are ch 1 and ch 2 grouping of inputs to select. IP (input) groups 1, 3, 5 and 7 in Sonar. Then you have SPDIF, ADAT (specialized inputs) and Loopback which is for recording sound off your pc etc. Those also pertain to Mix Control's Routing options. So it should give you an option for stereo, just remember that IP1 Left is CH 1 input and IP2 Right is CH 2 input. If you operate in stereo in mix control select Stereo IP1 For input Ch's 2 and 4 would be Right IP1 and Right IP3.

Glad to hear you are all enjoying using your Scarletts and Saffires with X1. Beepster: In regards to your question about using the optical input with the 18i6, you should be able to use it with any device that has an ADAT optical output. The only thing you have to do is plugin the lightpipe cable to both devices and set your Sync source in MixControl to ADAT. You will want to set the device sending the optical output to internal clocking. It really is that easy.

Right on, stevec. I'll probably be doing some guitar tracks this week so I can let you know how the instrument line in sounds and maybe try and push the latency as far down as it'll go to provide some more realistic numbers. Then I have to dig out my mics to test the actual pres. I'll be sure to keep updating that epic thread as I go. But so far I'd say it's a winner. Cheers.

Excellent, thanks. I would be using both the Hi-Z and Low-Z inputs so that would be great. Plus as I mentioned in previous threads, low latency is a big one for me. The borrowed Lexicon Ionix 422 I'm using goes as low as 128, but when CPU reaches 50% or so the driver performance suffers, forcing me to increase buffers. I know other interfaces handle low latency/high loads better than that, but I can't really afford an RME and even the OctaCapture is at (or beyond) my $$ limit.

Well I'm still just scratching the surface of all this stuff but as I said I'll keep everyone updated as I go along. One thing to know about the Focusrite 18i6 though (and probably many of the other focusrite stuff) is it has a "Zero Latency Monitoring" option. Essentially it just outputs the incoming signal directly to the main outs instead of out to the DAW and back so what you are playing is what you are hearing and it records in time with the music. The only downside to this is any effects you have applied to the input track in the DAW is not audible. So if you wanted to have Guitar Rig affecting your input monitoring it wouldn't work. You'd just get the dry guitar signal. If however you were adding your effects BEFORE the signal hits the interface it would be no problem.

Although I do ocassionally monitor thru FX, for me latency matters more for playing VSTi's in real time.

To me the only real problem I could see it causing me is not getting my picking/palm muting/harmonics right with a dry guitar signal. For vocals, bass or really anything else it won't affect me. I'm sure I'll be able to get some decent latency numbers going though once I fiddle with it more. I do NOT however expect this device to provide the really crazy low latency some devices provide but I think I'd be okay with around 12ms round trip.

but I think I'd be okay with around 12ms round trip. That's a decent round trip number in my book! Now, if you can get that while CPU is in the 70-80% range, without noticeable shap/crackle/pop, then you've got something.

All good to know information. I've monitored recordings thru X1 for years so that would take a little adjustment. Guitars not so much since I use a j-station or a preamp for most of the guitar work. I would think as steve mentioned that vsti's would be a problem. Drums and backing strings mainly for what I need.
