***FINAL REMIX 1/1/12*** Any Way You Want It (Journey Cover by Guitartrek and Markno999)
A cover of Journey's 1980 hit Any Way You Want It. Geno Plitt (Guitartrek) on vocals and guitars. I recorded a backing track of this Journey song to experiment with some power guitar tracks. Around the same time I heard Geno's version of Don't Stop Believin' and thought he would be an excellent collaborator on this tune given his vocal and guitar skills. My original guitar tracks didn't survive the process;(, except for some rhythm parts at the outro chorus. Geno played all the rhythm and lead guitar parts, I did the drums, bass, organ and some rhythm guitar at the end. I mixed it and also created the BGV harmonies using Wave's Ultrapitch to generate more voices, harmonies and dimension. Geno gave me some nice harmonies to start with though so all the voices are his. Hope you enjoy. It is a fun tune and was a blast to record. Learned some cool stuff about mixing rock guitars in the process too.... Original Mix - http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11250354&q=hi&newref=1 Final Remix Version - http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=11264491 Edit - added link to Remix Version...

Mark/Geno. I first listened out of my presonus through the cans and it sounded great but a just little open or harsh or something. I instantly wanted to see how it would translate on my old 70's marantz with a set of vintage klipsch speaks. It sounded amazing. The guitars are excellent. Great performances all round. The vox are a hard act to follow but Geno pulls this song off fantastically and the harmonies are superb. Nice job mixing tho the performance was so good I really didn't pay that close of attention on this listen.

Bravo!! Outstanding performance. The mix sounds a bit nasally, like maybe too much in the 1000hz range on the master bus?

Good effort, the instruments are very realistic. THe mix on the instruments is good. Vocal is good not just sitting in the mix like the original. Nice job all around. Merry Christmas:-)

Mark and Geno. Good performances. Have to agree on the nasal/harsh mix. Listening on my Sennheisers HD600 Audiophile cans. Too harsh.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I may have cut too much of the low end out as I had to mix this one mainly with headphones. I will have a look at the HPF cuts to the bass drums and see of eliminating them takes away from some of the nasally quality that seems to be universally heard. Will post an update later and appreciate everyone's comments. Rhynosynth- Glad it translated well on your 70's Marantz and thank you for the performance comments. Hopefully the changes will make the performances sound even better;) Marco - Thanks, I will fix the mix. I hope... Karalie - Thank you. Kiki - Wow, glad you liked it. This was just a super fun song to do. Rik - Thank you for the comment, I am glad you liked it. I do highly recommend hearing the original, good song;) Ed - That seems to be the consensus. I think I made too many cuts to the bottom end and I hope reversing that will breathe some body back into the low- mids and low end. Thanks for the listen. Regards

Very well done. A bit tough for me too listen to - one of my buddies is in a Journey tribute band - I probably saw them a couple of dozen times this summer - tough to listen to any Journey any more. But, you guys killed this - very nice.

WOW... great cover! Performance wise you guys nailed it. KILLER job on the guitar & drumming. The vocal harmonies are spot on. . Mix wise on my end it sounded pretty good. I agree with the other the mix just needs more separation. I would go back and play with the EQ to get more mid and low end. GREAT COLLAB gents! Kev

Bobby - thanks for your comments. Mark used Superior for Drums and Trilian for bass. I'm not sure what he used for organ. I used my Les Paul into POD Farm and my Vox through a Sure KSM27 into UX2. Mark has some sophisticated plugins he uses for processing and did some wild stuff on the Vocal harmonies that I'll let him explain.

This is excellent. No crits with the performance at all. I do have to agree the EQ on the mix is a bit bright.

Mike - Thanks for your comments - Mark did some absolutely amazing things with the Vocal harmonies. Guitarpima, Guitarhacker, Tim - thanks! Bandontherun19 - thank you for the feedback and compliments. Steve Perry is the man and whenever I listen to the original I'm blown away by him.

Great job on this one guys! Mix is a little bright...drums seem a little too separated at times...especially the hats and cyms...but man, there's no bashing any of it and the mix didn't bother me. The performances are spectacular! Incredible job on everything mark. Geno....*bows* you're just...sickeningly gifted in everything you ever do. Incredible vocals, guitar....I'm a fan for life man...but you knew that already. Great job guys...thanks for sharing this! -Danny

Hi, Mark and Geno, Wow this is really dynamite all the way around! I did this in many of my cover bands right up until a year or two ago, so it brings back a ton of good memories. Fantastic job on the vocals and guitars Geno, and the performances by Mark on all the other instruments were perfect. Everything was very true to the original and the great musicianship really shows. I'll echo the comments about the mix being overly bright, but as Geno mentioned, Mark is already working on that aspect. Fantastic work, guys, really a top notch cover! Bob

OK, now it's rockin' with the frequencies. Maybe a highpass on the main (rhythm/riff) guitar @ approx 100-250Hz? But that is just a very minor nit. Much better than the last version. Pumpin' like it should.

Ed, Thank you for the update, I am so glad to hear that this version turned out better. I will have to have a look at where the HPF is on the guitar bus. I think it is somewhere under 100Hz at present. I actually tried experimenting with a Tape Saturator and Compressor on the Master Bus on the first mix and I guess it blew up.. adding some mid-high and high frequencies to the overall mix. I guess the old adage, less is more, is a good one to follow in mixing as well. Glen, Glad you liked it. I hope you liked the original version;)

I went with an off-axis mic placement that is more bass heavy of course, so maybe there needs to be more lows taken out. Sounds good on my headphones.
