FREE dynamic EQ download!
The IQ4gui Dynamic EQ (not a catchy title) is available for download HERE. It's conceptually similar to the Sonalksis DQ1 dynamic EQ plugin. If you haven't worked with dynamic EQs before, I'd suggest reading the short manual that's included with the download. The manual isn't the greatest so it may take awhile to wrap your mind around how to use it. However, dynamic EQ can be a wonderful and dangerous tool in your mastering tool box. Use with caution!

ORIGINAL: DonM This is very cool . I dropped a note to the the guy who wrote the code for this one suggesting that he also include 3 bands of regular EQ. It would be conceptually similar to the famous Weiss EQ-DYN http://www.weiss.ch/eq1/eq1-dyn.html If you've ever had the chance to play with one of these pupppies you'd wanna take it home but the $3500 price tag gives most people cause for pause. I personally chose to go with an analog EQ and use any number of plugins (Waves LinEQ, LimMB, or some of the Voxengo offerings) when I need digital EQ. It's nice to have one more tool in this category.

Thanks jsaras! Seems very transparent and warm-sounding to me. One question: there's no built-in limiter, right? Would you recommend using Sonitus compressor set up as limiter (what settings would be best?) after IQ4? Or better a dedicated limiter? I have only the Sonar stuff and some freebies, though. Thanks in advance! werner

Sweet Jonas! I just read the manual for that sucka, I love their "You can ruin your mix!" warnings. Other than having different 'characteristics' I'm not seeing exactly how it's different from multiband compression. Here's my guesstimate... In a multiband the signals flow through parallel paths from Bandpass filter > compressor > sum back together So the compressor can only affect the signal in the passband of the front end filter. This dynamic EQ is different because it each band affects the whole signal with a parametric EQ setting that is controlled by the dynamics of a seperately adjustable bandpass filter. Is that right? ...the other Paul G on the board

The manual isn't the greatest so it may take awhile to wrap your mind around how to use it. However, dynamic EQ can be a wonderful and dangerous tool in your mastering tool box. If I read the pdf correctly it looks like it could be a nice tool to carve out a little sonic space if two instruments are fighting for dominance. Like a guitar and a lead vocal. When the lead vocal is present then the the guitar can be eq'd to leave a hole for the vocalist. Or maybe a good way to correct bleed in a drum mic?

Nice plugin but..., I can load a blank project and insert this plug, and my CPU go's from 0 to warning. Other times it just causes drop outs in projects where my Cpu is already at 20%. Strange behavior.

When I read "side chain" I automatically thought it meant it could be keyed by another track. This doesn't look to be the case. Either that or I don't see where the sidechain is.

Hi all! Glad you found a use for my plug.. You may be interested to hear that I have been working on a better version, currently sporting the memorable title 'IQ4pro' The design is fundamentally the same, except for the following: Lower cpu use. 64-bit internal resolution. Peak / RMS detection switchable per band. More flexible side-chain filter options, with new BR mode. Cool brushed aluminium skin (by Eric Langou www.novaflsh.com) There will also be a version with extra side-chain inputs when I get round to making it.. One of the main things currently delaying its release is: I can't decide how much to charge.. any suggestions at all? Dan W :)

Free? I might give it away free.. if it wasn't for the other people who have contributed (graphics and custom made filter modules) .. and the fact that I am now expected to create a bunch of presets, write a manual, and learn how to create a web site for it.. I'm buggered if I'm doing all that for nothing! (Thanks dreamkeeper, you're welcome!)

Haven't got that deep into it yet, but it seems to have huge potential and sure has a nice sound. It seems to be a "beast" also, I don't have problems setting up a multiband but this one is different. But then again, I like beasts! werner

hey IIRs dude, i'm a programmer too, hoping to make plug ins eventually. In another thread people are saying it's worth the price of a *house* for certain effects like analog summing. Given the expectations of our customer base, seems like we've found a great market here. good luck to you

Sonalksis CQ1 & DQ1: http://www.sonalksis.com/index.php?section_id=3 $279.99 each I'd say tweak the code the best you can (add the sidechain) and license it to Cakewalk. Let them bundle it. Then spend your time creating another product (lather, rinse, repeat)

I downloaded this last night, and have been working with it. It's unique, and I think it sounds pretty good - maybe even good enough to replace some of my older mastering plugs. I like the free beta version, but I would be willing to pay a bit for something with more features, etc. Although, as it stands the free version is quite a deal :) If you want to move these, I would suggest a price in the neighborhood of about $99-$129. My advice - contrary to most views - is to not sacrifice quality in exchange for conserving CPU demands. The problem with most effects is that they - technically - perform the way they are supposed to, but not at a quality level that rivals the hardware. Keep the quality and advertise it as a special intensive plug that needs to be used alone or just in mastering.
