Factory P-Funk Presents: a funk magnum opus...Rise Atlantis

Here's my attempt to honor the legendary sound, flavor, power, insanity and funk of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins and the Parliament Funkadelic All Stars.

One of my funnest songs, I think.  Look out for the funky-fresh-phat bass solo at 2:31. Listen to it loud, and feel free to smile! I know George and Bootsy would!

Rise Atlantis

All my little creatures at the bottom of the sea
Tell me, are you receiving me?
All the little fishies and the crusty crab
Gettin down the best they can
Move to the left
Move to the right
Tuna steady rocker
Davy Jones a locker
Waves rock at my command
Guided by the trident held in my hand
Getting high without a single puff
Gills gettin filled with the funky stuff
Drowning in the funk
Drowning in the funk
Drowning in the funk
Drowning in the funk
Rise Atlantis, once again
Bring the funk to every man
It's a Mermaid raid upon the land
Boogie down upon the sand
Shake it hard with all you got
Jump back in when your tail gets hot
Drowning in the funk
Drowning in the funk
Drowning in the funk
Drowning in the funk
Rise Atlantis, once again
Bring the funk to every man

Throw me a lifesaver man.. I'm drowning in the funk! Wicked tune and you nailed the vibe. Fun catchy lyrics that are also a staple in this style. I just listened to this once and I was enjoying it very much and not really paying attention to the mix but nothing jumped out I could comment on. Great job James.

    Great production as always.

Not sure I was feeling the vocals as much as I normally do on your tracks.  They just didn't seem to quite fit the song.

    Still a good tune though.

This is one of my favorites of yours.  Rather crazy, like you said, but I'm diggin' the music.  The bass solo IS quite cool and did make me smile.  This would take a couple listens to take it all in.  Great stuff!

To be more in the true spirit of P-Funk, the lyrics perhaps should have been a bit more "cosmic" and a bit less "cartoonish", but whaddaya want for an hour's worth of composition?

I was just thinking what a potent mix this was when I read that.
It's a good thing we're in the digital age. I wonder if this wouldn't blow the needle out of the groove on vinyl?
Very punchy, and the mix is up to your usual standards.

now that waws fun!  Quite an arrangement.  Clever lyrics.  What did you use for bass?  Really good funk sound.  Some very "sound" music.  :-)  No I'll have to practice slap for awhile.  I think this was a very creative tune and a great arrangement and mix.

.What did you use for bass?  Really good funk sound.  Some very "sound" music.

I used my crappy Squire Jazz bass DI, through my ART PROChannel (which helps with its compressor quite nicely to give a good even level) into POD Farm 2 plug in. I used a modified Bootsy patch loaded with AutoWah, with a dry send going to a buss to handle the sub, which gave me more control without sacrificing the slap, but provided a firm bottom end (this will hereby act as a placeholder for a sure-to-be-off-color comment from Robby). The wah did not come through as hard as I would have liked.  I did love, however, the scratching bass sound I got during the second half of the solo, which believe it or not, is really just the verse bass line moved ahead I think an eighth note.

This is really great stuff James. I think the funk is what you do best, it really exudes enjoyment, like your absolutely relishing putting all your favourite 'bits' in. Loved it. Did I hear a tiny 'Ride on Time' sample in there at 0:40? Beautiful mix too, everything clear and defined.
