Factory Yoyo presents: Earth Mother

I had this wild idea a while back, to pen a real throwback Vietnam-era protest song.
But here is the twist (since nothing normal ever seems to come out of the House of Yoyo!): it's a protest song that imagines Jimi Hendrix was under contract writing songs for Motown in 1970, and it was sung by Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops.  With backing vocals by the Cowsills.
Full of that signature far-out Hendrix imagery, a naive longing for some celestial momma who could come down from the stars and save us from ourselves.
I started this tune about 9 months ago...I am glad to be finally finishing a bunch of these songs that have been moth-balled for so long. It is intentionally a bit of a hairy mix, an attempt to achieve some of that not-perfect flavor of the times.

Enjoy!

Earth Mother

Earth Mother
looks down from a thousand stars away
Earth Mother
we are lost and cannot find our way
With all the wars we fight
there is no end in sight
still she's calling
sing along

Earth Mother come home,
Come home and teach your children well
Teach them to love
Love, Earth Mother, love

Earth Mother coming out of the sky
Black sails slap against the night
Dark eyes salute the flag
Another body placed in the bag
Still she wants to sing
come on sing along

Earth Mother come home,
Come home and teach your children well
Teach them to love
Love, Earth Mother, love

We're all crying for our Mother
Who wants to feel that we love her so
See her tears my brother
Stop the war and let it grow

Earth Mother come home,
Come home and teach your children well
Teach them to love
Love, Earth Mother, love

It's time to start a revolution
My brother, my sister,
It's time to start a revolution of love

Earth Mother come home,
Come home and teach your children well
Teach us to love
Love, Earth Mother, love

Maybe Little Feat meets Earth Wind and Fire?

It's pretty cool, but I thought the Sha laa laa's collided w/the lead vox when they coincided.

Re:Factory Yoyo presents: Earth Mother 2011/02/15 02:25:01 (permalink)

This one makes me think of it in terms of "intertainment". Although it is song as in
the way of it being a song to listen and groove to, it has a (maybe I should call it an
added feature as I find myself not only listening to it, but being entertained as well.
It might be that the way it's mixed has something to do with that. Maybe not the mix
so much as an intended type of "tone". I see that you mentioned "not-perfect flavor"
in your thread. I think that you succeeded in that.

What is unique is that it doesn't sound sloppy or out of whack it just has that
persona about it. I don't know whether it's intentional or not on your part, or your
just doing different things lately but your sounding (in your productions) less
electronica, as in more (or the use of) instruments such as guitar arranged to
    produce the songs.

      This is really cool.

Cool song, to my ears the lead vocal sounds more like Gene Simmons.   Mix is outstanding, I wish my pristine mixes sounded as good as your "hairy mixes."  Love the guitars, is that a real wah at the intro or are you using Guitar Rig or other sim?  Great 70's funky feel.

You've really been on your game lately.  Great vibe, Sort of Zappa sounding mix.  Sort of a Zappa sounding tune as well.  Take a bow.  Well done!

Yea all this needed was a quick break with a really odd time signature played with a vibraphone and you could stick this on a Zappa album.  I like this a bunch.

This is great!  I love the funky guitars! The vocals sound more like Gene Simmons to me as well, which is good thing in my book.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. Glad you all seem to hear the funk! This one is screaming out for one of those classic plate reverbs; unfortunately, none of my 15 (!) different reverb vsts could get what it needed.

Mark, it is an amp sim, through POD X3, though not the vst, just played and recorded live. That POD has some wicked wah patches that really cut thru the mix.

ok...I danced all night as a local disco (which seconds as kitchen as directed by my wife) and beside me knees from aching....I'm stickin wiff my last nights Newcastle assessment...

Great tune...very very creative! What I really love is the dip into the funkiness of years gone by..AND the modem mix and vibe.

I'm STILL taking your "Best of" with me...

I'll just ensure I have a ample amounts of "The One and Only" to fuel the tropical party!

Genuinely interesting and unique tune there, James, and what an amazing production job.  How many vocal tracks did you have?  It must have been a bear to mix, but I think you nailed it.

I don't think I've heard you sing that low and husky before, and you really brought it off quite well.  Maybe we should have you on the short list for vocals on the next CHB outting

I thought I could feel some gospel influence in there too.  Lots of stuff going on, and all of it very cool.  Great job.

Luckily for me, i remembered how loud your mixes are, so i reduced the volume on my headphones before pressing play. How do you get them to sound this big?

Anyway, this was massive. The vocals were fantastic as was everything. The guitar solo at 2:16 was superb. Loved it all.
