Factory Yoyo presents: Love Surgeon, an old school Tom Jones-style soulfest

It occurred to me last month I hadn't done a song in 6/8 in quite a while. I just started off with a groovy electric piano, and it went from there. I enlisted our buddy Cian McGovern (Whack) to sing it, and he responded with the best he has ever sounded. I also picked up Kontakt 5 when they had that awsome deal in December, and you can hear their keys, organ and horns on this one. Bass and guitar by me, and beats by Superior Drummer.

So here is a little Tom Jones-inspired early 70s soul, with an appropriately cheesy title. Let me know how it hits ya:
Love Surgeon

What a pleasant surprise.  What's not to like?  The horns in particular sound about as realistic as a sample can sound thanks to a  fine arrangement and understanding of horns.  Great vocal and lyrics.  Very well done.

Wow I didn't even notice it was in 6/8, great spot Beagle.  Wow again the sound of this track is cool James, like the lyrics too.

The only negative comment I have to make, although I like your voice or whoever is singing and it is sung well, I keep hearing the vocal line lower in the registar, ie a baratone singer rather than a tenor.  On saying that after the middle of the track and I think you might modulate the key if your singing it or whoever is you really nail it.

    Good Stuff

I know what you do to them while they're under... "Close your eyes and count back from 10, when your eyes open, your heartache will end (but something else may hurt pretty bad?) I don't think I've ever done anything in 6/8? I've done things "from 68?" House of the rising sun was in 6/8? Recorded by the animals in 64 (4 years before 68)  6/9 I'm familiar with? But that's another discussion altogether.

Boffo!  Great concept, great dynamics, I like the melody a lot.  The mix on the vocal sounds really nice, the tone is excellent.  A goog tune overall but man that vox mix really stands out, very slick.

Love the bridge.   All the tracks set very well.  You just keep getting better, as do most of the folks here.  Very cool tune.

    Lynn, Reece, Robbie,

    Thnaks for the kind words.

    Ben:

Originally I had written this for a deeper voice, so I hear what you are saying. Regardless, Cian smacked the crap out of it.

    Daryl:
Thanks, I consider myself a poor melody writer but occasionally I come up with stuff that actually works!

Mix sounds good. Different kind of song. Kind of live sounding to me, so more dynamics, but not too much. Sounded really good.

Great job, guys.  James, you have been about the most diverse writeer up here in the last year or so.  It might have been that way before but it is more apparent to me in recent times.  Cian does a great job on vocals and instrumentally it's so interesting.  As far as the song itself goes, I love it!  Great changes.

    I love it.

The chorus is fun and catchy.

Would you consider a bit more soft organ bed in the verse... to reinforce the vocals with harmonics. This would not be to replace the cool keyboard figures happening already. Just a sonic texture that makes the vocals sound a bit fuller. I'd suggest that the horns are doing this in other sections already.

I really enjoy your creativity and this song is great example of your special take on things.

    best regards,
    mike

Aww that's wonderful. Spot-on writing and arranging James, you really are a musical chameleon. Those backing vocs are just bang on the money.
    Fine performance from Cian, excellent.

I started to chuckle when you said this came out of a realization that you hadn't done a song in 6/8 for awhile.  Then I realized that most of mine start out with 3-4 notes and just build from there.  So...not much different. Except that yours are way more diverse than mine will ever hope to be.  Anyway....great job here, both of you. You both make your performances sound so effortless.  Well done!

    Hey, James,

Very cool "vintage" sounding pop song!

The songwriting, arrangement and instrumentation all sound fantastic, and Cian did a dynamite job on the vocals.  The production work and mix sound spectacular.  I could easily imagine hearing this in one of the 70's era James Bond movies.

Killer good stuff, James, have a good one, buddy!

hey jim love the concept here, the horn swells are just divine. Ciaran has a great rock/pop voice, not sure if this is quite his thing, though he does a great job. i think the backing tracks are a little underpowered at times, i keep wanting to hear a few of the little motifs a bit more upfront, but having said that, the mix as a whole is superb, the sonic pallette you paint just right; just occasionally would like to hear, say, the hammond, pop into my ear...amazing talent.

The arrangement and vocals are sweet. The mixing is stellar. I kept waiting to hear something else like a buildup in the bridge or a departure into something like a tempo change with a funk groove into a James Brown thing, but then that wouldn't be Tom Jones lol. Great stuff!

I did try to do a changeup with the break where it is spoken then into the bg singers, but that JB idea is awesome.

There is a hammond working throughout the entire song, but I had real trouble since that electric piano sound is real tricky to fit in without getting it all thinned-out, in a lot of the same freq range as the organ.

As I mentioned earlier, I originally wrote it for a Barry White style of voice, but Cian did it so well when I sent him the original idea he won the job! ;)

I am blown away.  Wonderful energy!!!  I think the fidelity is the best I have heard on the forum.  The lows and highs are so clear!  What limiter did you master through?  Man, you are good!  Danny Elfman does a jazz tune!  I played with him in 1978 in L.A.'s China Town at Madame Wong's club.  Great creativity.  Thanks.

I have been using Ozone for years, but the past year I have been using the T-Racks Brickwall Limiter, usually on the Sat 1 setting.
