Fallout Of Your Love - REMIXED- your thoughts?

Here is another song that I've been kicking around for a while.  I'm thinking about adding it to a collection of songs I'm putting together.  It's a little different for me, it has distorted drums (by design), and I'm can't really change that at this point.  My questions:  does it sound dated, and does the mix hold up?  As always, I appreciate your time and comments.

It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=9105993&q=hi&newref=1

The newer version can be found in post #27.

    The tune is def cool.

Nothing is dated anymore, just vintage.

    Needs a real mix, though.

warning, if you're wearing phones or buds? Don't have your volume up when you start this. After I changed my underwear and came back to this. I like your song, but I'm less a fan of that fuzzy crunchy percussion effect, however, that's more a personal taste thing probably. I'm also not digging the synth that comes in at 2:24.

    Lynn,

The distortion on the percussion made my ears itch. You've got the makings of a nice song, but I think you need to make it easier to listen to.

Lynn, how can you get your MP3 that loud?  Don't like the distortion on the drums - it runs against my grain.  Why not use the same part and really overly compress it (pumping and all)?
I love how the song breaks into the bridge/chorus section - nice melody.
I would do a guitar solo instead of the mini-moog solo.
Can't hear the bass well at all.
Overall, I like the tune and your ideas.

    fuzzy crunchy percussion effect

Lynn,  I think that the fuzzy percussion might be a unique sound that sets this toon off.  I also think that it is just a little bit too much out in front of everything.  Particularly when it is working against the vocals.  I think the sound is worth experimenting with though.  Could this be a candidate for side-chaining to keep it under control while the vocals are working?

I don't know why I keep getting a GENSIS vibe from your music.  Doesn't sound dated to my ears. You just have style/vibe that is your own with a hint of Gensis.   Really catchy tune. KUDOS!

It is definitely different.  For me it is all OK I just feel some monkeying with the vocal sound could add just a little something.

I think the ideas or the production are/is really cool, it sounds a bit like Peter Gabrieal.

I can't comment on the mix because I'm listening to it on my TV speakers.

So keep on working on the mix if until you like it, thats the only advice I can give on the mix.

    Good job though.

Mix-wise, the vocals are way too low. If you could invert the levels of all the instruments against all the vocals, it would sound a lot better.

Pretty cool IMO for a rough mix.

I happen to like the distorted drums.

I happen to like that winky synth @ 2:20ish.

Maybe it could use some occasional 8th note percussive action.

I like the song overall. I keep wanting to hear more "substance" from the distorted drums, like a little less scratch and more of subbass synth sound going down. Agree with others mostly on the other elements: didn't care for the sound of little synth lead and the fact that this song reminds me so much of something Peter Gabriel would do. Vox even reminds me of him. Mark

I agree with James. If you like it who cares what "dated" is. At first I thought it may have been a synth patch making those distorted sounds. I would definitely do away with that if it were my own mix. I love your vocal ability. The song is arranged well IMO. A keeper for sure!
It is a really hot mix. Maybe this is what you wanted. In my headphones it almost lifted me off my chair lol.

I want to thank all of you who've responded.  Here's my dilemma, I recorded this song several years ago on version 6 with another computer.  Back then I backed up my songs by burning a bundle file to CD.  I have since changed residences and I'm still looking for the box  with my backup files.  I agree with those who say that the mix is too hot (who knew?), and with those who would like to hear less distortion and more vocal.  As always, I get some really great ideas from my fellow forum members, and I would like to take another crack at this song.  I do like the song, but it could use an upgrade.  If I find my backup CD, I'll remix and post again for your observations.  Thanks again.

    All the best,

    Lynn,

This is a cool song.   Definitely has a nice 80's pop feel.   Maybe a little like the Cars.    Love the 80's.   I woud keep working on this, it has a lot of potential....  Maybe back off on the distrotion drums a bit but I wouldn't eliminate it.  It brings an interesting element to the song.  Like the guitar parts and strings too.....   I think the song Push It by Salt-N-Pepa sort of has the drum sound that work work, but with a bit of distortion added.

Ouch ! I've given this one a few listens on different days to see if I would get used to it, but the distortion still makes me wince. I like the idea, but it needs pulling back some for me. I would be inclined to bring the vocals forward too, though maybe backing the perc off will sort that anyway. Like the song / idea though - very interesting as seems to be your trademark.

I like it..reminds me of Greg Kihn a little. The spacious arrangement is very cool. The drum distortion is a little distracting, and might have more effect if used sparingly. Gabriel does this kind of thing, but it usually comes and goes in the tune.

I like alot of your sounds, Your song "Rivers Of The Sky" had a late start in me liking it. I know that song really comes from the heart. you have sounds you have in the bridge are outstanding, as well as the chorus. A+ music. In some way it reminds me of the doors. Not your voice, but the cool sounds

    Hi Lynn,

I like the song a lot, very cool.  I didn't like the distorted drums at first but got used to them by the 2nd verse.

I think the lead vocal could come up a bit.  Great job, though.

    Hi Lynn,

Nice mix on the go here, have confidence to bring the vocals up a bit more + some acoustic guitar riffs could make a nice counter-point to the electro-rock vibe is the only change / suggestion I could think of.

Well done mate, it doesn't sound dated + the end chorus going off into the distance has nice retro-80s feel.

Lo and behold, I was able to resurrect this song from an old bundle file that I created in Sonar 2.2 XL.  Of course, not all of the f/x were there, so I replaced them with 64 bit vst's.  I did turn down the distorted drums, and I turned up the vocals as many have suggested.  I also added a few little percussion sprinkles throughout the song, but I generally tried to stay true to my original vision.  If you have the time, I would love to hear your comments because now this song is in X1D format, and I can play with it to my heart's content.  Many thanks to all of you who listened to it the first time around.  The new version can be found here:  http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=11510733&q=hi&newref=1

    Lynn,

I think you have the distorted drums tuned in now, they sound good.  The song is really good.

The only thing lacking for me now is that I think you should pick up the beat/drums on the choruses.   It feels like it wants to take off and really soar when the guitar comes in, but the drums are continuing the original motif.   I would ditch the distorted drum sound for the chorus, go for a big Cars 80's drum sound and then back off to the distorted drums again for the verses.   It would really bring some dimension and excitement to the choruses.  The verses are cool as they are.  Just my two cents for what it's worth.

    Hey, Lynn,

I only listened to the new version, but it's a very cool song with lots of interesting elements, good instrumental performances and excellent vocals.

The synth work and distorted percussion definitely give it an edgy, modern vibe, and the mix sounds really well done.

Nice work, have a good one!
