Yes. For the money right now, Fathom is excellent.  It sounds great.  It has one of those GUI's though that is bordering on trying to be too smart for its own good.  Very dark, some quite convoluted ways of doing some stuff but overall a good sounding synth that is worth the money being asked here.  Quite dark and organic sounding at times but covers many bases.

But I must say another great bargain is Ron Papen's new Go 2 synth.  This is a new one he has just done and it is only $49.  This is a killer synth with a killer sound and it is all laid out on one page mainly.  Very easy to navigate.  It is super clever in its engine design and produces a huge array of sounds.  Of which you won't fully know and appreciate either until you actually buy it.  But also very good value. It may be an introductory price only, not sure.

This is my first Papen synth and I am super impressed how this one sounds though for sure.  The others must sound incredible.  Go 2 is super inspiring for me too.  Can't stop myself from playing it and that is always a good sign for me.

Paypal deal extended an extra day to 5/19/18.

The developer is super nice and is very active on kvr audio. I bought it if nothing else to support the developer. He seems to know what he is talking about if you read his site with things like simulating voltage ripple, aliasing, etc. This comes across to me like a zebra lite without the waveshaping filters. The interface is a little wonky and the labeling takes a while to wrap your head around. The top bar is almost invisible with buttons being similar to the background, but other than that a lot of deep editing possibilities.

I like his take on the mod matrix and the way once you draw an envelope shape, you can extend it out. He comes from an engineering background, so you can see a lot of detail in being able to edit waveshapes and create your own wavetables. For this price, I can't imagine anything out there surpasses it. Looks like he has a number of things he will keep adding as well as taking in requests.

Re: Fathom Synth 2018/05/20 22:34:16 (permalink)
I spent some time yesterday exploring Fathom more deeply and it was very revealing.  It is one great sounding instrument with some very quirky aspects but all good stuff though synthesists will enjoy playing with.  It is complex and capable of a very wide range of sound/instrument types from single fat sounding basses or leads to sequenced riff sounds and up into pads and textures. Just exploring all the provided libraries will open up the larger range of sounds on offer.  It's deep and I love the sound of it for sure.  At this price too it is excellent value.

The manual does not cover using the Browser as far as I can see so you have to explore this for yourself. But it is easy enough to navigate.

Click on the Browser button below to open up a list. Click on Category up the top to put all the sounds into their different classes after loading up new libraries.  Easy to find all the pads or all the bases etc..  I find this helps a lot.  Over on the far left open the programs folder.  That will reveal sub folders with sound libraries inside.  Just click on the author name and a whole library of sounds will load up.  Once a library is in, select Category at the top, and then a sound and double click on its name in the Folder column to get Fathom to load it.  The Browser window will automatically go off and the main synth window will come back up.  Click on the Browser button below to bring it up in view again.

And yes the GUI could be more practical and clear.  There is nothing gained in making things almost impossible to see. Be good to get to important edit items quickly as well and more efficiency perhaps.

But none the less a great instrument well worth exploring and playing. There is much to be explored and heard here.

Just to add. If you are on the programs folder and click the subfolders button near the bottom right, it will load all the subfolder presets into the browser. You can then enable preview, scroll or single click on each one to preview without closing the browser. If you do this, previewing does not replace what you have already loaded or edited until you double click or load the preset. Once you do this however, it overwrites whatever you had loaded. Couldn't find the phaser presets yet mentioned in the manual - maybe a future add. Already created some templates. Extremely powerful once you understand the naming conventions.
