Finally--a Christmas song from me. On video even. :)

With everybody posting videos these days, I thought I'd get in on the fun.  So I just whipped this thing up last night and videoed it and posted it just now.

And if you believe that, you really don't know me very well.  The short story is...here's me playing an original arrangement of We Three Kings.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y26RT-A2lYA&feature=youtu.be

Also on SC:

The long story, for those bored enough to continue reading...

About a month ago I decided I'd like to try a fun arrangement of a Christmas tune.  So that translated into this song going round and round in my head almost every quiet moment (am I the only one that thinks that it's sometimes a curse to be a musician?).  Then I tried to play it and it didn't sound quite as cool as it did in my head.  Then my shoulder started hurting so I couldn't play it at all.  So that meant more work on it in my mind.  (you should hear it in my head! :)  Finally I tried it again...and I realized that if I played it enough times, I might actually be able to execute those cool 'riffs' AND remember what comes next.  So after about a week I felt pretty good about it.  Friday and Sunday I performed it publicly and didn't screw it up, so I figured I'd better video it before it got worse again.  This time I videoed it at my DAW so I could edit the sound to make it sound decent. (and, OK, I had to edit a couple notes)  So that big luscious grand piano sound probably sounds a little incongruous coming out of that little keyboard in my bedroom studio.  But it's definitely better than a video camera sound.  I wish I could say I thought everything up, but most of the cool parts were little 'mistakes' that I realized sounded pretty cool.  Maybe some day I'll actually get some real musical education.  Anyway, here it is.   Merry Christmas!

When you said video, I was expecting some Paula Abdul choreography? This was nice though.

Thanks Tim.  Yeah, it was until I painted my son's new studio (photography) yesterday. Probably not a good idea.  Oh well.

Thanks Mark.  I think I would have recognized your handle even with the extra numbers.  ;)

Thanks Ed.  I hope he likes it too. :)

    Hi Janet,

Excellent job!  I love seeing you play in your own environment!  We all should do that at times.  It sounded really good on my cans.  Great arrangement and very creative.  Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks Rimshot.  I had way more fun playing this on a baby grand, but I don't have a way to record it well there.  But I agree....I love seeing musicians at their craft.  :)

    Thanks Mark.  :)

Thanks Herb.  But my head would have gone out of the frame and that would have looked dumb.  :)

It's always great to see the song in motion.  You did a VERY nice arrangement.  The video magic still blows me away.  You made that grand piano look like a little studio job.  Nice work.  LOL!  I guess you managed to pull that arrangement out of your head after all, and made it sound great!

This arrangement flows very nicely. You must have done a superb job of arranging this in your head. Sorry to hear about the shoulder. Watching you play does add to the experience. Loved it!

Cool, Janet!  I recognize that "axe"!!!  (Scotty - that's a Casio Privia PX-310.  I know because she bought it used from someone she knows!  )

that's a really nice performance I loved the arrangement!

Thank you Gary.  I figured that since I actually went to the trouble to learn to play this live, I should have some record of it. :)

Thanks Scott.  It's a Casio Privia PX-310 that I bought from Reece.

Thanks Warren.  Yeah, that's a pretty good sound out of that little thing and my humble studio, huh?  :)

    Thanks Mike!

Thanks Jim.  I must have gone through that thing 500 times in my head.  I'm SO ready to get a new song in my head now.  :)

    Thanks Reece.  :)
