xeon recording

Does anyone run an Intel xeon server for recording? I am using a pentium 4 w/ a gig or ram which works just fine for what i am doing but i have a Dell xeon quad core server that i was considering building up for recording. It would be cool to have the extra headroom if i ever do video editing but I don't really see that in the near future. I think i can just take out all of my current drives and just transfer them to the server and maybe buy some extra memory. Are they worth it or are they overkill? Any input would be appreciated.

    HI,
it depends on which Xeon processors you have. the older ones were not worth a poo.
the newer woodcrest or cloverton rock!

JS and Skull can I pry some knowledge from you?

Is it my imagination or do these new technogies seem to hit the Xeons before the Consumer Processors? As well as the price drops?
Given a Dual Core Xeon @ 2.66 and a Core 2 Duo @ 2.66 how would these compare (outside of the sockets)?
Any advantage to Server Based vs Desktop Based besides some kind of durability?
Skull.. why did you choose to go that path?

Kinda' getting at the Xeons seem to hit speed faster and drop prices sooner. Given being able to find an ATX size motherboard why isn't this choice made more often? Especially with the availability of multiple sockets and more onboard memory slots?

    Always puzzled me.

First, when I put this system together, It was mainly about being able to mix an entire song without loading the CPU up to 98% - which I was doing with my P4 3.02. Just couldn't get through an entire mix without choking that bad boy with plugins. And I figured while I was spending the money...might as well do it right.

It was also about building a system around running a 64bit OS. Since Sonar is dabbling in it, figure I might as well go that direction - though I'm not currently running the 64bit veresion of Sonar OR a 64bit OS. But I COULD (and did for a while)...and that's the important part. I like upgrade possibilities.

The price...couldn't touch this speed for this price anywhere. It think this remains true in the Xeon line...you are correct.

Wanted to use all Intel spec'd parts - MB, Processors, Case to ensure they'd play well together and not overheat. Very quiet system.

I went with the Server MB because I wasn't worried about on-board video or sound. This machine is specifically for recording. Nothing on there but OS, Sonar, Sound Forge, and some plugins. Is there a better MB for this? Maybe...I'm no genius....but....

These Xeons hyperthread and run on a 1066 FSB. 2MB of cache on each core.

Are they better than the Core 2? I don't know enough to say either way, honestly. I'm not disappointed.

    She's doing everything I hoped she'd do!

    HI,
a woodcrest (dual Core) Xeon 2.66 and a Core 2 Duo 2.66 is IDENTICAL in a single chip config one offers no benefit to the other.

however Xeons are designed to be used in pairs., the motherboards are often server class (tyan, Supermicro) stay away from anyone else.

so 2 Xeon woodcrest's 2.66 is what we are talking about.
    something to note~

a single QUAD Core 2 duo 2.66 will outpferform the Dual Dual Xeon 2.66 due to bus communication.

where a Dual Quad Cloverton 2.66 will far outpferform the Single Quad Core 2 duo...

so my point to this is unless your going to buy a dual quad Xeon dont even bother with Xeons. as sinlge quads willl best them and are less money.

the only other thing that would make sense is you build a cheap (1.8G) dual woodcrest now with the intent to upgrade to dual quad 2.33/2.66 when prices drop.

    Thanks guys...

Understood... actually just wanted to reserve this as a possibility depending on the PCI configs and motherboard size of the Supermicro's.
