I've got a gibson j-185EC which I think is an great sounding guitar. This is a cutaway version of the j-185. There are usually a few for sale on Ebay. They generally go for $1100 - $1400 depending on condition.

    Michael,
I don't have a url for ya, but I've owned and used a Gibson J-45. The guitar recorded well. It has a deep, rich tone. Just make sure that you don't put a mic too close to the sound hole.

If you got the bucks there are some awesome Gibson acoustics.
The lowest prices retail are around $1,400.
the Gibson Acoustic Songwriter is a jem.

i could never afford a Gibson Acoustic though, i would
rather spend the money on a top of the line Epiphone acoustic
that sound and look identical like the one Paul McCartney
used on Yesterday. Which is the 1964 Texan acoustic.
for the same price as a low level Gibson acoustic

I recently played a Gibson Hummingbird. Goes for around $3000 (canadian dollars), probably about $2500US.
It was so sweet, one chord and the neck seemed to nuzzle into the palm of my hand... By far the nicest acoustic guitar I've EVER played!

Sounds the same? Hmm...I don't know that I would agree with that statement.

I've played a few Epiphones that were preferable to the Gibson originals. A Firebird, Thunderbird bass, and an SG to be specific.
Still, I'd imagine the acoustics are a whole different ballgame, being more reliant on the specific build and wood etc...
But unless you're looking for an investment, I'd recommend trying both the Gibson and Epi versions of whatever you want - you could be surprised.

If you get a chance, play one of the Advanced Jumbo re-issues... you might change your mind.

The AJ isn't a "jumbo" body shape like the J-200. They call it a jumbo but it's really the same round-shouldered body shape as a J-45, but with rosewood back and sides instead of mahogany like the 45. The pricing (at least last time I checked) was less than the Hummingbird and it's got better mojo IMHO. A real cannon.

If you're really at the point of shopping, I would look for a used deal on one of the Montana special editions, like for instance the Buddy Holly J-45 re-issue or the Sheryl Crow signature model Country & Western, both from a few years back. Gibson Montana seemed to lavish a little extra care on the special editions... check out e-bay.

Or go whole hog and get a clean, vintage 1950 J-45... Whooooee!

oh god I dont have a exact model number cause Im at work. but the chet atkins semi acoustic is great for recording. its what dave mathews used a ton on his early work. its very easy to get all kinds of tones out of the thing and its designed for studio work. heck epiphone makes one that isnt that bad either. oh and to the guy who said epiphone acoustics. NO NO NO NON ONNNNNOOOOO!!! if I could spit on the floor I would. those things are not even half of a half of a half of a gibson acoustic. I would also not get a new one get an older one. they were made so much better back in the day. also dont buy an acoustic sight unseen. acoustics all sound different. I once went to the martin factory and they proved this by letting us play like 20 of the same guitar and they all sounded different.

Any of them are good 'cause none of them have any bass! No need to roll of the low end with these things. Even the treasured J-200 is a plinky little thing (well not little, but little sound)

Just got an SJ200. ( Jumbo ) In my opinion' its one of the best sounding and best playing guitars. I do mostly finger picking, blues and rags. I've wanted this guitar for a long time and can't say enough about it. Playing into a Shure SM81 through a vintech pre into Sonar-sounds pretty damn good.

I was a Gibson and Epiphone dealer up until about a year ago. There isn't an Epi made that will hold a candle to a Gibson. For instance, the Epi hummingbird is made of very cheap laminate woods where the Gibson is solid. And if you actually play them side by side you can definately hear and feel it. Even the masterbuilts felt pretty cheap in comparison to the real deal.

In the whole time I had Gibson acoustics my two favorites that came through the store were a J-185 with some crazy flame maple and a lowly Songwriter Deluxe. That Songwriter Deluxe was just spectacular and everything about it was great. I'm more of a Taylor fan myself (have an 814ce, 615ce, t5, and ns32ce) but it would hang with any of my own guitars. The only Gibson I like better is my good friends sunburst '66 J-200 that he got from his grandpa with the original hangtags and reciepts from '66. That thing just sings.

yeah also you said you are comparing a high end epi to a low end gibson. yeah well lets race my VW Passat W8 against your audi a4 and see who wins...... (for those who dont know that a top end vw vs a lower end audi) w8 would crush it in all areas.
