hanging notes in soft synths in Sonar Studio 6.2.1

Hi, folks,

I've been baffled by this problem for months now, and I think I've narrowed it down to either me, my soundcard, or sonar. A search on the cakewalk forums turned up nothing. Here's the deal:

When I insert a soft synth and start playing it via MIDI keyboard or in playback, I get hanging (or stuck) notes. The note keeps playing until I hit the panic button. It seems to happen most often when I hold down multiple keys, but it can also happen from single key hits. I first noticed it with Absynth, but I also see it in Roland GrooveSynth, SampleTank, and a few others. It doesn't matter if it's DXi or VST. I also saw this in Sonar 5- I upgraded to 6 hoping it would solve the problem.

Here's my set-up: Sonar Studio 6.2.1 running on Vista 32-bit on an HP Pavilion. The soundcard is a presonus Firebox with the latest driver, and an old Yamaha keyboard plugged into the firebox's MIDI. I also use an M-Audio Axion 25 with USB plugged directly into the HP, and I still get hanging notes (and I also get it on playback, so I guess input shouldn't matter...).

The googling I've done suggests that something is not giving sonar the midi "off" command to kill the note. What I've found suggests this is the fault of the soft synth, but I'm having the problem with all soft synths. Could it be the soundcard? This is well beyond the bounds of my meager knowledge. I'm sure I've left vital info out. Can anyone shed light on this?

Thanks,
Greg

Just to follow-up on my post, in case anyone else hits this problem. I found the answer on the cakewalk website under "using cakewalk with soundcards":

"Q. My sound card sometimes hangs notes on my synthesizer and crashes the computer.

    A. Several sound card manufacturers provide hardware and drivers which contain a defective MIDI Out port and cannot be fixed with a software update. The problem usually appears on faster computers where the interface can't react quickly enough to keep up with the computer. If your sound card manufacturer confirms this problem, you will need to get another sound card or a MIDI interface to install along-side the existing sound card. You will still be able to use the FM synthesizer and the wave playing portions of the sound card though."

"get another soundcard" was not the answer I was hoping for. I can only shake my head and sigh that my problem is my computer is too *fast*. I talked to Presonus, and their answer was basically, we will not comment until the vista driver comes out. Understandable, but frustrating. Ah, well.

    Have a copy of WinXP?
    That'll resolve the problem...
You can pickup the OEM for ~$90.

I have the same problem but only with MrRay22, I didn't have the problem in Sonar LE so maybe they don't communicate that good... On the other hand I had the problem with Remedy in LE

    I run XP and use Konnekt24D and an Edirol PCR-M1 on a AMD64 3600+ with 1024MB RAM.

Still, on my hand I think the problem is the plugin as it is only with that plug it happens.

Actually, I tried that. I bought a copy of WinXp Pro, but the only way it wants to install on my machine is by wiping everything clean first. I know there are ways to handle that, but... well, you don't want to hear my sob stories. Basically, I was hoping I was missing some switch or setting or something in sonar, or at least to know that other people were having similar problems.

    Thanks,
