SOLVED: Project 5 dies while initializing device chain

As it turns out, it doesn't appear that there was any issue with Project and Sonar. I compared my DAW current registry with a back-up registry from two weeks ago and found that some of the vst entries in the vst inventory hive and found that somehow (I suspect the crash) had bodgered-up several of the keys there. A quick restore and I'm back in business on Project 5 2.5.1! Should have done this registry compare this weekend...oh well, hindsight and all.

After a Project crash this weekend where I experienced a test tone-like howl from the system, I rebooted and now Project 5.2.1 repeatedly crashes after scanning vst's. The splash screen shows "Initializing Device Chain" and then the app crashes. So far I've tried:

1) Starting the app with shift depressed to re-personalize
2) Deleting P5Aud.ini and Project5.ini
3) Uninstalling and reinstalling Project from DVD then applying the updates and the 2.5.1 upgrade
4) Reinstalling my M-Audio 410 drivers
5) Uninstalling and reinstalling Project from DVD then applying the updates and the 2.5.1 upgrade after reinstalling 410 drivers

Sonar is working fine - no issues there with the audio interface, but Project is severely unhappy.

Thus far my troubleshooting efforts have brought no joy.... I have recently upgraded to Sonar PE 7.0.1, but Project was working fine after upgrading Sonar until the first crash. My system is a 3.4 GHz P4 running Win XPSP2 with 2 GB RAM. Any suggestions?

did you install a new plugin recently? try uninstalling plugins, see which one fcks up the system.

    just a suggestion.

good luck troubleshooting your P5. I had never heard of such crashes before.

See if a registry cleanup does anything for you. In that the crash happens whilst loading a device chain makes me wonder if there's some bad info being read that's causing the problem. Ccleaner is my preferred app for this (it's free), does a good job.

Did a registry clean/repair, but still no joy. The odd thing is that Project 5 works just fine, but when I upgrade to 5.2, same failure at the device chain initialization. It seems to trip over Dimension Pro and generates an "unable to decompress" message moves on to Boost 11 then dies. I tried excluding Dimension Pro and Boost 11 in Plugin Manager but same thing occurs. I suspect that something new in Sonar 7 PE is causing the problem here as well. A bit annoying but I guess I'll have to call Cake tech support on this.

Woo hoo! I'm glad you got it resolved. I read your thread with interest (and thankful that it hadn't happened to me!)... and sure hoped that someone could help you figure out a solution. All the suggestions given by the others were the same things I was going to suggest. I was out of options... Glad you got it resolved. Good detective work on your part!
