Sampletank samples conversion
I decided to post this question here because this is where all the smart people hang out. ('I'm serious about that too!) I bought the Sampletank Expansion Pack for Mello Zone only to find that the version of Sampletank included will not operate with Vista and IK Multimedia has chosen not to update it for Vista. I've talked to IK Multimedia and their suggestions were 1) buy a Vista compatible version of Sampletank and 2) use a 3rd party converter to convert the samples I bought to a format I can use with other samplers. Any suggestions for converters? The cheaper the better, I might add! As a last resort IK did say that the demo of the proper version of Sampletank will operate for 10 days so I could download it and play every sample and record them and save them as waves to be used in other samplers, but I thought I would see if there were any other suggestions. Thanks for any suggestions.

Man that sounds like a lot of work, converting and re-recording samples..... I was having some sort of issue a while back and it dealt with the OS Vista....to be honest, I don't remember what it was, I thought it was important at the time, but it must not have been...anyway..... my point.....I have heard (that means I'm not 100% sure) that VISTA will allow you to set up a partition on the hard drive where you can install XP or another OS, and through some sort of computer magic, you are supposed to be able to select the operating system you want to boot to from a screen at startup. This allows you to choose XP for running the studio software or Vista for other uses. Check into that..... I remember the issue...I was wanting to run the Emu patchmix program because of all the patches that are available in it. It would not run under Vista....it needs XP. I never did the XP install but it is still one of those back burner projects. I ended up solving the issue by learning about sound fonts and don't (for the time being) need the bass & piano patches. As I discover more fonts, the need for PM diminishes.

I have found IK's support to be VERY lacking. I bought one of the expansion packs - the Phil Gould on Drums. apparently I did not realize that this "expansion pack" was mostly LOOPS with a few drum hits for the sampletank. no big deal, but when I went to use the drum hits they weren't mapped to standard GM and I couldn't find anywhere in the documentation where they told you what the maps were. I contacted support and they basically told me (after several emails back and forth and them telling me I was an idiot) that I just needed to listen to the sounds and map them myself because they weren't going to support that disk any more. I guess this story doesn't really help your dilemma, just to commisserate, I guess. A translator would cost you some money. so would buying Vista, and buying vista might cause you more problems than just the money. I'd say just try to sell it on ebay or get MF to give you your money back.

I too feel the pain, but hey to throw good money after bad might not be the best solution. This is precisely why i stopped with sampletank on the freebies, and moved on to sound fonts. maybe get the synthedit thing and turn any wave files you can render out of it into sound fonts and move on. http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1030.html

Thanks for the link Reece, I'll give it a shot. You know, Robo is mostly to blame for this as I seem to recall that he posted the thread about the Mello Zone Expansion Pack being sold for $20 at MF. But I'll forgive him. This time. Another thing I can try is to load it on my son's old laptop. which has XP. There are some convoluted ways I can get sound from there into my PC that has Sonar on it. I'll also investigate Guitarhacker's suggestion of running XP on a partitioned drive. I have two hard drives on my PC, would I be able to run XP on one and Vista on the other? (I'm not the most computer literate person, but it seems like it should be possible, but I'm sure there is something I'm overlooking that will make this idea impossible)

Well then, BAD DOG! BAD DOG! (swatting with a rolled up newspaper) I'm getting a lot of practice at this (minus the newspaper) with our new puppy. He's a Pembroke Corgi named Flick and talk about a hard headed dog.

Sorry for blaming you, Rob! Sorry for swatting you with a rolled up newspaper, Reece. I'm watching the NHL playoffs and got a little too caught up in the hitting.

Somehow i still must be guilty of something! One suggestion is to find and old P11 or early P4 at a garage sale for a few bucks, put a decent sound blaster in it, and a buttload of ram, load the hard drive up with synths and samplers, and midi cable the systems up and use it as a synth box.

Thanks for sharing your problem,,, I didn't realize ST LE wouldn't load into Vista, and it's good to know about that. That's actually a pretty good sound set, too. grrrrr that Vista isn't compatable with so many things. Don't underestimate the value of what you bought to get more deals, though. Let's take a trip down the "buy Sampletank" road for a minute. FWIW, you would qualify for an IK crossgrade to the full blown version of Sampletank, for buying it. You'd probably have to register you're copy on some other computer to qualify, though. IK is having a special offer until the end of the month that allows you to get a free plug in of your choice, (Amplitube 2, Amplitube Jimmy Hendrix, Ampeg SVX, CSR, or T Racks MSRP $299-$399) if you register a qualifying IK product, which includes Sampletank. So,,,, you could purchase the Sampletank 2.5 at a crossgrade discount for around $250 and you'd get Sampletank AND a $400 plug. (ok, yeah, your crossgrade on on that would be around $250, but still it's like half price on each) If you buy at esoundz, you also get thier special bonus disk tossed in, which has some Miroslov, world sounds and some other misc stuff. http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=259 If you really like these types of vintage sounds, eSoundz is running a GB on Rare and Vintage instruments that includes the Sampletank engine, (not the Sampletank XL soundset, though) with a free plug, too. http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1344655&mpage=1&key=? That said, I do agree that translating your sounds is a lot of work. If you can't run the Sampletank version you have,,, I'd either get Sampletank or give it away. Try the demo out to help you make your decision. At least you'll know if what you have is useful to you. Edit,,, the Chicken Systems free does one sound at a time,,, I haven't tried going out of Sampletank, so dont know how well it works. I would temper my comments about not translating them, if you have a lot other sound sets you want to change formats of. Then getting a full blown sample converter might be a good option. Just a few thoughts
