Lockout room
Im getting a lockout room next month in West Los angeles area. Im going to get a fair sized room and treat it with bass traps and some diffusion and some deadening if needed and set up studio there. Im pretty excited because I will be able to work 24/7. It will be a month or 2 before it is all set up' but when I get it in shape, Ill take some pics and post. So excited to have have freedom to record anytime-

It's where some of us do our tape splicing and other delicate operations. Lock the spouse, kids, and the dog out of the room, and get down to business.

Yeah I would like to know what a lockout room is too. Is it like a storage facility? Mike

24 hour lockout room is a place where musicians go to rehearse anytime. Also, many people set up studios in them. The rooms have AC, power and often internet connection available. Im going to get one for a monthly fee, 4 to 600 a month Ill be able to crank up the volume 24/7

Wow....you can get a room like that for about $300 a month here in Houston. But they're noisy because of all the other people there trying to do the same thing (or worse...rehearse their crappy band)...and sometimes they close up on Holidays - which sucks because that's the best time to be in there...when everyone else is with family. Lance.....for the 5 to 7 grand it will cost you (just in your first year alone), I'd wonder why you wouldn't just build out a serious room in your home with that money? Maybe you're in an apartment?

Hmm, I'd be interested in the sound proofing (and deadening) qualities of the internal partitions of the building before I parted with any cash. Like skullsession mentions above, do you really want your latest project to have smells like teen spirit rumbling in the background from next door?

Well I went with a studio haha- im renting a studio with a vocal both in it and lots of sound treatment. Im going to add some bass traps myself but it si a cool room and high ceilings- I move in Oct 1st. Ill make a video to show it after I get it all set up! I just wasnt happy with the lockout room options I saw- It is costing me about double what I hoped to pay, but this studio is noce and very cool, and it should pay off in every way!

Lock out rooms have come up in the world. In NYC there were several of these places, tho I would never set up a studio in one. My favorite was a sub sub etc. basement in little Italy on Houston. Some friends of mine shared a big (tho not high) room. I think "they might be giants" worked there for a while, too. The cool thing about it was it was used as a civil war prison, or so people said. But of course, people say all kinds of things. Still, a good story as you kept going down stairs and thanking that I wasn't a drummer. @
https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

I've been thinking of renting one in Toronto. Years ago when I was playing in bands, we always had lock-out rooms. I liked the community of it, as everyone would gather around the vending machines for a smoke, and comment on what you heard through people's doors (good and bad). It also helped for focus, because when you're in there, you're there for a reason. There's no internet, food, TV, etc, like you can get in a home-studio. Enjoy it Lance!

The DAW is in the middle of the room away from all walls, against the vocal booth at an angle, so I can see the vocalist but the maskies arent pinned against a wall... The vocal booth window is cool and plenty of space inside it, not big enough for drums but works for everything else- I really like it! The ceilings are really high, and there is sound treatment and some foam bass traps as well- The sound is pretty dead in here and the speakers sound pretty flat-
