How important is Hyper Threading when running Sonar 8.5 or Sonar X1?

Hi All,

I'm running an Intel i5 750 quad core. I just found out while digging around on the net that this CPU does not support Hyper Threading (HTT). I've never had a problem running Sonar 8.5 on this CPU but was wondering ...

A. Does HTT provide any performance increase when running Sonar 8.5?

B. How will Sonar X1 run on a non HTT enabled CPU seeing that it's basically the same engine, but seems to be more graphics intense?

C. Is it worth it to upgrade my CPU to an HTT enabled one or not?

I'm planning on upgrading to X1 as soon as it available and I'm a little concerned about PC specs.

Thanks,

Bub

If you have a multi-core system (ie, i7), HT isn't necessary.  Multi-Core is the real deal.  HT was a precursor.

But an Intel i7 is a quad core with HT.

I cannot substantiate this myself, but it has long been a commonly-held belief that disabling hyperthreading improves performance in a DAW. I do know that in my day-job world of databases, hyperthreading has been routinely turned off on database servers for performance.

EDIT: Here's an article that may be of interest. It's about database servers, but the concept of killing performance by reducing cache hit rates and forcing cache flushes is applicable to DAWs, too.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

When I update the BIOS on my motherboard it warns you several times to go in to BIOS and turn off hyper threading before proceeding with the update which I always thought was odd. I've updated a lot of BIOS/Mobo's and never saw that come up before.

I read the article ... thanks for the info. It sounds like I'll be ok with what I'm running. I can't wait to get X1.

I believe 8.5 was demoed by Cakewalk on a i7 (on 1366 bus) with hypertrading so the OS could show Windows 8 cores...  (Soooo if you have a Mac with two i7's (6 cores per cpu) with hypertrading you can see 24 cores..... Now..... THAT"S POWER......
