Sonar Home Studio 6 has stopped working
Hello. I have a problem which began last night. For the past year & a half i have been using Sonar Home Studio 6 on my laptop (which is running Windows Vista). I had never had any problems with Sonar HS6 since purchasing it last year, but last night when i opened it (having used it with no problems earlier in the day) it began to boot up only to stop halfway & present me with a pop up which had the following to say: SONARHS.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. I receive this message every time i try to open the program, i've uninstalled & reinstalled 4 times to no avail :( There do not appear to be any problems with any other programs running on my laptop, including Reason 2.5. And i've run numerous scans of the harddrive for problems/corruptions/viruses & found nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Did you try restoring the system to a few days earlier?

I hadn't considered that actually... however i'm afraid that it isn't an option for me, as there is only one restore point available & it was made automatically just a couple of hours ago. So i can't restore my system to any point before the problem began :( Thanks anyway though, it's appreciated.

To me that sudden booting sounds like a failing HDD or power unit. Your backups are in order, I hope.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Same here. I have been using Home Studio 6 XL on Vista for the past 2 years fine - Just booted it up for the first time in four weeks in order to record guitar and vocal. It was odd becuase after it told me it canot find the Creative ASIO driver (it always has done this - I just press OK and then it normally loads up) .......on this occasion nothing happened then a while later (about a minute or so) it loaded - Chose a new project, sorted out two audio tracks, vocal on one guitr on the other set my levels armed and clicked record and nothing - then a fit and start on the time line then stop then moved on a bit - However it was obviuos nothing was recording so press stop. Then it came up with NOT RESPONDING. So I left it a while, and eventually closed it down and the Windows Vista came up to say SONARHS.exe stopped working etc. So I rebooted my PC, started up Sonar again (this time i noticed that right at the beggining of the opening procedure for Sonar a new picture flashed on the screen that never used to - it is the same picture thats on the CD and Box - don't know if this is relevant) - Same thing occured - massive time gap between me clicking the OK on the Creative ASIO drivers not detected (as I said its always done this) - at the program starting up. This time I loaded an old project - took ages to load (15 tracks of audio and Midi with effects etc) - I played it it played OK, but as soon as I stopped it and tried to rewind I get program NOT RESPONDING and then eventually have to close it down. Tried restoring to another point - but it doesn't make any difference - I did note that I have't installed any updates on my PC since I successfully used it four weeks ago. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, 1 Terabyte of hard drive -Intel Core Quad 2.4Ghz processors, 3GB Ram - and it has worked fine for the last two years. Please can anyone help me with this. Many thanks Simon

it's very likely a soundcard driver problem - especially since you have "missing" Creative hardware. I assume from your post that you have removed a soundblaster card from your computer and didn't uninstall the software? if that's the case then you need to uninstall the creative software. what soundcard ARE you using?

Hi Beagle, When I first bought this new PC nearly three yeras ago I installed a Creative audigy Platinium, only to find out it was incompatible with Vista. I Uninstalled the soundcard and replaed with a Novation Nio2/4 USB interface. Although I had uninstalled the card on booting up Sonar 6 XL the CTASIO warning appeared, stating "There are no Creative audio products installed and running on the system that support ASIO" - Although annoying I pressed OK and it then procedded to more or less instantly give me the start screen where I could choose an existing project or create one etc. Although the CTASIO warning was annoying it didn't appear to stop anything working correctly for the last two years or so. The Problem now is that after pressing OK on the warning there is a massive time delay before anything arises and then it stalls durting play back and doesn't record - Does Not Respond. I still have a "Creative" file in my file structure but the PC will not allow me to delete it - I presume thishas some drivers in it. I have changed the name of the file by putting a z in front of it, uninstalled Sonar and reinstalled (currently Version 6.2) and its the same. Its a mystery - any help would be much appreciated as I am supposed to be recording a singer song writer on Saturday! Simon

Hi Simon First up you need to make sure you have the correct and latest drivers installed for the Novation audio interface. The other thing is that some audio interfaces 'drivers' aren't that great! How good is the driver for the Novation? I don't know, all I know that other brands such as RME, MOTU, Edirol, EMU are good. Windows probably wouldn't allow you to delete the Creative files because it was still hooked = being used by another program. Have you checked SONAR >> Options >> Audio to see that your Novation audio interface is setup correctly? Have you tried deleting the Cakewalk >> AUD.ini file? Have you re-run the WavProfiler? Also, Go into Control Panel and make sure your new audio interface is the default and working properly. Reboot PC. Then double check above. Install CClean and do the 'Clean' after that's done scan for 'Issues' and fix!! Once that's done close CCleaner and reboot PC.

I 'bold' the part of your post to highlight that the issue appears not to be a failing hard drive since you're able to successfully run other applications such as Reason. Have you recently installed a plugin? it could be causing the problem. Give this a try to narrow down possible causes.... Hold Shift+whilst opening SONAR, don't load plugins! Go to Plugin Manager + now find the latest plugin you installed and remove it. Close SONAR and re-open as normal. Other possible causes for either you or Simon are recently installed software, and/or uninstalled/reinstalled programs messed up Windows registry! Download CClean and give your system a good clean up, also scan for issues and fix (there are also options to backup the registry before fixing), once done reboot PC to refresh the system / registry.

that sounds all too familiar with Sonar 6,especially when run with Windows Vista, there are some serious glitches with Sonar 6 and 6XL and I dont know where they are after messing with a whole bunch of options under the tools tab,the options tab,as well as the process, tracks I had no luck,it was wierd cus after I first installed it I couldn't get it to record a thing even though I had everything copacetic as far as configuring my sound card and setting up all the prerequesits to recording digital audio it just wouldn't pic up any input from either a mic running through a preamp or running my guitar through an amp as a preamp and then through a four channel mixer to get my levels right and then one day after reinstalling the drivers and making some changes to the mme interface it started working although with som latency issues. Also every sound card is a little different so ask one of the techs at the Cakewalk Technical Support Team.
