Great stuff, very English vibe indeed, more mid than early Genesis influence to my ears, but indeed that ballpark. VERY nice - maybe a tad more lower mids/bass - or maybe that got lost a bit in the 128kbps mp3, I remember I compensated that in postprocessing with a miniscule boost around 200-240 of a dB or 2, and it came out more or less like the wav.

I'm a perfectionist, and perfect is a skinned knee.

Remixed this one last night, I think it's a lot improved on the previous version.

See what you think.

The remix sounds good to my ears. Love the mix of prog and indie in this track, works really well.

Well it's not very fair to you because I just listened to that song ICON by ed? And his mix "sonicly" was pretty damn hard to compare to. I like your song here, and the chick vocals, very nice. I'm not sure what it is about the mix, but it can be improved. It sounds like there's a lot (maybe to much going on there in the middle? I'm not sure on how to make it better outside of just generically talking about looking at panning and EQ'ing. Also, I would like to hear a bigger bottom on this tune. Drums are getting covered up. Those rasberries vocals are good, but I may back them off just a tad, and again work on panning and EQ to give it a clearer sound.

Please don't take any of that wrong, it's really a great tune :-)

Hey Robby - I never take any of your comments the wrong way!!

You've always made constructive criticisms in the past and I expect nothing less!!!

The mix can be improved - absolutely no doubt. This is the latest in a long line of mixes for this puppy, but I am edging closer to the sound I want.

The iterative process is hard at work, no mistake.

No doubt I'll do another version, but I'm out of action for three weeks as of tonight - visiting the USA on a 7-city break.

Hello everyone.

Just finished a re-mix of this song, well, more of a total re-write, re-arrange and re-track.

Anyway, be good to get your comments. Sonically, I think it's a lot better than the previous version.

Oh - it's only up on the Mixposure site at present.

Thanks Steve. We eventually went totally away from the "pop" sound of th eorignal and tried to something a little more guitar based.

Rush eh! Now that's a band we haven't been compared to before!

Colin is that your wife (Lyn?) singing? She has a great voice.

The mix is a tad light on the bottom end still. Much improved over the other, but still a bit sharp in the upper registers by comparison to the bottom.

Shad, the bass end has been plaguing me on this song, right from the very beginning.

In the end, I replaced my original played bass line with Scarbee Pre-bass samples, and this tightened up the bass amazingly well.

I'll post another mix up soon, as I've been making a few adjustments most of today.

Is a work of art ever finished?

Edit to add: Yes, that's my wife Lyn, who contributes lyrics & vocals, which is a great asset as I can do neither.

Shad, if you're around mate, I've just posted up another version on Mixposure - one with a little more bass in it.

Re: RE: Got A Feeling 2009/09/03 16:58:10 (permalink)
You have expanded the song as well I see. I like the additions.

I think two things are happening. I think the bottom end of the drums is phasing out the bass guitar. They may be too evenly matched in tone.

Would this be accurate? When you then try to bring the levels up, things get noisy and so you bring them back again?

Are you running out of headroom on both bass and drums?

At this point, I would start to EQ out the bottom end of the drums. I would then replace the kick (keeping the original there but shelved) with something from a kick that has oomph (choose a tone that compliments the bass harmony wise). Once that is in place, I would test it against the existing bass. Do the harmonics (the over/undertones) play nicely together? Are they additive instead of destructive?

If you would like me to take a crack at it, I would be happy to. Can't promise I can do any better tho.

Re: RE: Got A Feeling 2009/09/04 04:49:23 (permalink)
Some good ideas there my friend.

The kick I can play around with quite a bit, as there are 2 virtual mic channels coming from BFD, an In and an Out, and they do have radically different tonal qualitites.

There is still plenty of headroom available on both, so implementing some level changes is perfectly feasible.

Thinking about it, there might be some interference coming from the toms, which do have quite a low-end ring to them, though they don't play all the time, so maybe this is a minor consideration.

Thanks for staying with me on this one - it's getting there slowly!!!!

That was pretty sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the guitar based Brit pop sound and the vox were nice.  Some good song writing too.

I missed the first version but I'm glad I caught this one.
