Metallicas "Black Album" and Megadeths "Countdown to Extinction"
These are 2 metal masterpieces, just curious if anyone has any opinions on the production of either of these?

just curious if anyone has any opinions on the production of either of these? I love both of these....................my opinion is this.............the song writing on these 2 releases over shadows any production flaws either may or may not contain...........In my typical fashion the more I like a particular release, the less I bother with the production elements..........does that make sense?

I can't speak on the Megadeth album, but personally I hate the sound of the Black Album. There's some good music on there, but the production is cold and thin. It's probably mainly fashion of the time. And also I'm not a "real" metal fan. For me, the greatest metal sound I've heard is on Korn's Issues and Untouchables. Listen to those drums! Those guitar layers! Those vocal effects! That's where it's at for me! -Kim.

For me Black Sabbath's....origina....l not re-master................."Master of Reality'.........dry,present and warm............ and ................Jon Olivas. pain........."Taj Mahal"...........outstanding compression techniques without killing off dynamics.....its very punchy, yet maintains depth.......

Wow...Jon Oliva. A name I haven't heard in a few years. I sure do miss Chris. Hard to belive it's been more than 15 years since he was killed...what a great player.

I LOVE Korns "Untouchables", I think it is their best album, hence the name. I like the industrial feel to it, I hope their next album resembles this direction. I wasnt crazy about the 2 albums that followed "Untouchables", tho the "Untitled" album was good.

I feel that the Black Album has a more big, in your face sound, while Countdown to Extinction has a tighter, colder feel. I really cant get over how great the drums sound on the BA, in the documentary of the making of the BA, they had mics all over the drum room, in the corners of the walls, overheads, mics everywhere, and about 27 tracks used for the drumset. They changed the drum heads after every few takes.

yeah i was gonna say, when i got the Black album back in the day, on double vinyl, the first thing that hit me was the drum sound - it was immense! i don't really like Lars as a drummer, but the stripped-back rock sound of that album suits his low-tech approach to drumming far more than AJFA. the other thing on that album is the amount of mids - listen to AJFA and the sucked-out mid-range, then the Black album, and the guitars have more oomph and the vocals especially more depth. whether you agree or not with the actual music, there's no denying the production qualities. quite how that became st. anger's sound i don't know.... megadeth have always had sub-par production for me, i actually like 'peace sells' best for production...imagine tornado of souls or hangar 18 or holy wars with a Colin Richardson or Tomas skogsberg behind the desk! Great thrash albums production wise include 'reign in blood', 'twisted into form' and 'practice what you preach'...

Wow...Jon Oliva. A name I haven't heard in a few years. Check out his last few releases.........a lot different from the Savatage stuff......hard to believe, but I like his new stuff better, especially production wise........ And yes, Chris Oliva was a great player...very different in lead style than most of his genre..........he didn't get the credit he should've.........

Deaths "Human" is also a thrash album with superb production by Scott Burns.

the guy used 45 drum mics on Lars' kit I think. Damn.....top and bottoms on all Toms still would only run me into 17 mics. I find the black album to sound very nice but I find it has a dated production in a bad sense... it has that over-produced sound without the the raw sound (70's) that I like on my records and is why I use tube amps and not VST plug-ins. As far as metal goes.. meshuggah's Nothing (re-issue) is very nice.Like mentioned above, the playing is of super-human nature. Even if recorded on a 4 track tape tascam machine would still blow my mind. There new album Obzen I find the guitars are a little thin though. There drummer did all the samples from Drum Kit From Hell Superior Btw
