problem with mic, time to replace????
for a few weeks now i have been trying to diagnose a weird sound behind the source sound using a sm57. after a process of elimination, i found it to be that mic. the sound i speak of, is a crackling sound that seems to noise gate itself after a few seconds. (no noise gate in the chain) i only just noticed it when recording clean guitar and bass amps. generally i use it for distortion so i never noticed. if i pluck a single string (bass amp), and let it ring, it crackles for a moment then the crackle fades out leaving the guitar sound fine after that. so my question is, what is wrong with this mic? the underlying sound doesnt show up when using a sm58 or my tube condenser vocal mic, so that has to be it. not the amps, not showing up in the speaker with my ear up to it, i tried different pre's, cables, so that left the 57. has anyone had this particular problem with a mic before? looks like ill just have to buy a new one....only 100 bucks but just wanted to know what happened to it. thanks

I have had a similar problem with a condensor mic that required phantom power. Turned out that the battery in the mic had lost its charge fully and until it was back up to speed, I got a crackling noise from the mic. Yours is not a condensor and does not require phantom power, so it's a whole different thing.

Did you really throw the old unit out? It was likely a bad wire or solder connection. best, mike

I've seen similar problems with dynamic mics many times over the years. Let's face it, these things tend to get abused.

mike_mccue Did you really throw the old unit out? It was likely a bad wire or solder connection. best, mike I was gonna say....did you take out the bottom plug at least to see if all of the leads were making good connection?? Holy crap. Dig that sucker out of the trash...I'll pay for shipping to my place!

i did take it apart. no loose wires, no solder problems. i even got the D clip off and looked at the top of the mic. a film of plastic with ribs was the problem. i lightly blew on it and it crackled. no big deal, just a 57. the new one, i have tested out with bass and clean guitars, much better.
