Yea, do what ever works for that song and instruments. If that call for sending each instrument to its own buss, then do it. If it calls for sending a couple to the same bus, then do that.

Good call: DON'T feel the same compression (or other effects settings) is needed for all of your work. You may find NO compression is needed. Compress with your fingers and voice... there is an art to it, but still there ARE great ideas in here.
 
Remember: If you go thrird-party to get your works mastered, give the mastering engineer something to work with... go easy and don't over-produce your work because ultimately you'll pay them to "shine and wax over a marginal paint job."
