RESOLVED - Newbie - tried searching - now what? Midi Sonar 8.5 Studio

I have been using HS7 and Reaper for a while now.  I was able to hear Windows sounds, and play files with mini in them until I installed Sonar 8.5.  Now they appear to play, but there is no sound.  There are no sounds now when I set a windows theme either.  They have been working.  I am not sure what has happened or how I did what I did.  I tried ensuring the audio cards I use were active.  Presonus Firebox and Realtek HD. It appears that the MS GS Midi is no longer recognized, I think it used to be found fine.  In reaper I new get the messagfe the the MS GS Softsynths cannot be opened.  I did not used to get that message.

I am running Vista Home in 32 bit, Presonus Firebox with current updates and drivers.  Audio is working fine.  I am sure thre is probably an answer here and I am missing it (probably as I do not know what to look for here).  Sorry.  Any help to get me checking the right things would be apprecaited here.

Do the tutorial about using soft synths (was it # 6 or #8 ??) and read the manual about the subject

Disable the Realtek. It makes no sense to use the lowgrade MS GS Midi sounds when there are 100 times better options in Sonar.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Thanks!  I will do that in this case.  I was able to get some sort of piano sounds messing with things so I if I figure out how to change instruments for some of them I would get what ai wanted as well I would guess. I also have the update for 8.5 installed as well.

There is not a Drummer thing with studio as I understand it.  What I want is a drum and bass synth really.

I have the soft synth aspect working at a basic level and expected I will figure out how to do multiple instruments in a bit with it.

However, all my programs in windows (media player, winamp, etc) no longer play. I assume I just need to reassign the sytemt or use only the firebox some place.  Where do I do that?  I tried changing the system settings in the control panel but that does not seem to have done it.

As Kalle said, make sure to disable the Realtek first as it can cause conflicts. If you can't switch off the onboard sound in the bios then at least disable it in the Device Manager of your Control Panel.

Also, open Sonar and click on Options > Audio Options > Advanced and check off "Share Drivers With Other Programs". Then make your Firebox inputs and outputs the system defaults in the Control Panel.

Most softsynths (except TTS-1) are not multitimbral so in order to use them for different sounds, you have to load a separate instance for each different sound you want to use. Dimension Pro will allow you to use 4 different sounds at a time, but they have to be on consecutive channels, i.e., 1, 2, 3 and 4. See the Help menu in Dimension Pro for the how to.

Depending on your Soundcards capabilities and level of being "built in", sometimes you can't turn them off in the BIOS or disable them in device manager and get sound. Try just choosing your interfaces drivers as inputs and outputs in windows audio controls and Sonar. For the Midi, you should have other listings now other than the GS in windows audio controls. There are just too many sound card variables to tell exactly which way will work. WDM or ASIO? I'm assuming you know how to set up Sonar. Are you dependent on your computer sound card for output? Tell us more about your system.

Woo hoo!  It was the Bios setting this time.  F2 gets the bios setting for internal devices.  I disabled int here and everything now works through the Presonus external card as it should.  I can't see how an install of Sonar did that, it had to be something I did some how.  It looks like everything is nearly up and running now.  I need to find my archived MP3 encoder from CW and see if it loads, and figure out how to use some of the plug ins from mt Reaper folder and I hasve it in business.

I am using TTS-1 for the Soft Synth and have one synth session and 3 midi tracks feeding it.  One midi track routed to TTS-1 track 1 one for an organ, a second to the TTS-1 track 2 for the drums and the third to the TTS-1 track 3 for the  bass.
