Sound works when recording, but gets quiet after a few seconds

I am using Sonar 8 Producer Edition on a Lenovo T400 laptop with a Conexant sound card on Windows XP SP3. I am using MME (32-bit) driver mode. When I hit record, I get a nice signal, but the audio level and waveform drop down to almost nothing within a few seconds and stay down. I tried recording with Windows Sound Recorder and the same thing happened. Has anyone else experienced this? I tried a different microphone cable and got the same thing. Thanks.

First, check to see if there's a driver update for your soundcard.

Second, if you're going to be recording audio you should consider a higher quality sound card.  The onboard card os ok for Windows sounds and surfing the net, but not for serious audio production.

I would also check here: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/hardwaresetup/, and follow the directions. In my opinion, that is the most necessary and useful part of any website for Sonar.
