very quick question dealing wiht mics

I get seem to get my mic to record loud. It will record extremely softly with all volumes up all the way. Must I run the mic through something before I run it thorugh the mixing board. Or must you enable something in Sonar first nefore recording. Thanks so much.

    Hi,

Is it a condenser or dynamic mic? if its a condenser, then you need a preamp or desk with 48v phantom power, if its a dynamic, then you should be using a preamp, but it might also work direct to desk depending on the desk of course.

    What mic?
    What mixing board?
What sound card are you using?

A few things I would make sure of:
    1) that the channel your mic is connected to is set to amplify microphones, and not line-level signals.
    2) That the output of your mixing board and the input to your sound card expect the same level signal (either +4 or -10)
    3) That there is no "dB pad" on the mic, mixer, or sound card that is turned on and reducing the signal level.

Quiet recording isn't too big a deal, espeically if your sound card can do 24 bit recording. But you should be able to crank up the gain when you need it...

Thank you. I found the problem, somehow the wires got screwed up, and in the midst of frustration I kept following the wrong wire. I hate when that happens, I got the problem fixed now.

You need to enable the +48v phantom power button/switch on your preamp, but make sure to turn down the volume also. AT mics are fairly hot mics.

You also need to make sure that if there is a pad on the mic, that it is engaged.

    Hope this helps.
