Problem Removing Silence..

I wrote a quick song this afternoon...wanting to send it to some friends I have a gig with to give them an idea, possibly play it at this festival we're scheduled at.

For fun....I also worked up "Hurt" by Nine Inch Nails...my own version.

That song...recorded all tracks well...no problem.

The song I wrote...that one acted weird.

For one...and this happens more than I care to admit, I will select a track, go to edit and select "Remove Silence"...

it runs thru its first line at the bottom, then says its dealing with the split clips. Takes anywhere up to 20-30 minutes to perform that function. Scares the heck out of me, and I don't bother using the remove silence for any other tracks, ahahah...Ssheesh!

So any ideas from those of experience why that might happen?

Then....I tried to bounce the tracks in preparation to export to audio, ultimately to create a wav file...

I'd say....four times in a row...the Hour glass would come up showing an action is taking place...but nothing.

When I clicked on Alt Control and Delete....the window would say that the project is not responding, and I'd have to end task. Good thing of course I have the habit of saving because otherwise all recording would have been lost.

The "Hurt" song...which I went on to do...bounced tracks no problem. I was able to export and create a RIFF wav file.

I would appreciate if anyone had a clue why that might have happened.

Oh ...yeah, I am using Sonar 3...on a newer multi media computer made just for this...PC...with Windows XP....

thanks...

There have been a few threads on the topic. I believe one of the workarounds has been to cut the audio track and slip edit the newly created audio clips. Or, you could use a track volume envelope. Do a search for "remove silence" and you should get a few threads on the topic.

    thanks Torhan,

    I'll try a search....

Never had problems with Cakewalk 9.0 or Sonar2 upgrades....but must be a glitch with the 3.0.....

    too bad...

    thanks

Try doing the same things with the same audio tracks in a new project and see what happens. That will tell you a lot.

I ended up redoing the song...yes new tracks, new project.

I don't know if it was the problem, or how that setting would have been changed since my last projects....but in the Audio...it was set on 24bit, and I believe should have been 16bit. I changed it back. Whether or not that made the difference, I don't know. I know that 16bit is necessary to export sound to RIFF wave format.

Also...I used some settings for the Remove Silence that were suggested in an archived post here...and that too may have made a difference, I don't know.

All I know...is it worked this time. Then again, it worked on my Hurt song tracks.

Guess the system just has its equivalence of PMS...and moods.
    thanks...
