Dropouts Dropouts Dropouts...

I'm in dire need of help. This is my setup:
p4 2.8 w/HT
512mb ddr ram 400mhz
Aardvark DP Q10
Win XP
Sonar 3.1 producer's edition

I can start a new project and it will work fine but if i save it and then reopen it and try to play or record or do anything it drops out and plays whatever is there very slowly and jittery I have tried absolutely everything in the help online and bundled with sonar to no avail if i save it and close it i'll never be able to use it again. Also, the 3.1.1 patch won't recognize that i have 3.1 so it won't install. Any help on either of these would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You did not mention how you have your drives, app, OS are partitioned out.
Is your Audio Data directory on it's own discrete drive?

Could be the pentium 4 de-normal bug. To check out this problem that P4's have with processing go to

    digitalfishphones.com

    and download the normaliser plugin.

There is a lot of info about denormalling issues on the website.
I had similar problem with my desk and laptop comps and this free plugin solved the problem.

I also had the same problem with my desktop not loading 3.1.1...very frustrating...I am no computer whiz at all, but it may be worth checking to see that you haven't loaded windows twice.

When I was trying to solve my dropout problem I had the guy who built my pc reformat my hard drives and he noticed that I had two versions of windows xp, after formatting I successfully reinstalled 3.1.1......maybe it was just reformatting that did it....good luck.

    Dear Magic,
I ahd tons of dropouts too on about the same type of system that you had and what helped me after my requests and the many answers that I got was basically changing the Audio Buffer I/O up to 512 from 64 which was the defaut.
You can do this be going into Options/Audio/Advanced and you will see the Buffer I/O. Also it depends on also the amount of effects in your effect bin that you are running, what kind as well. You should adjust your Mixing latency in the same Options/Audio/ General Tab. Play around with it and see what you results you get. also please check the thread I put out and the generous repsonces I got from this very helpful Forum, pretty helpful people here. Being a studio muso sometimes it s pretty lonely place, hard to find someone that speaks our lingo, ha!
Here is the title of the thread: Audio Dropouts like Crazzy, Helllp! 25/5/2004 sorry I am not so good with computer stuff so that's about the best I can give you for the thread. But if you check back posts you can almost find the answers to most problems or at least comfort yourself that your not alone, ha!

First thing to do is to identify why the dropout is occurring. There are three likely causes:
    1) CPU - check your CPU usage (in SONAR). This may be the cause if it's "spiking" or running above 80%.
    2) Disk - check your disk usage (in SONAR). This may be the cause if it goes above 50% at any time.
    3) Audio card/driver/PCI bandwidth. This may be the cause if both meters look ok.

General stuff to check - ensure you're using UDMA on all hard drives, try different latency settings.

Thank you for your help so far to stitch and kegerator I'm using two wd 7200rpm 8mb cache drives one exclusively for audio. I built the comp myself so I know all it's inner workings. Cakewalk is installed on the exclusive drive. Windows and everything else are on the general drive.

    Thanks again

That might be your problem. Cakewalk, and your picture cache, should be installed on your "C" drive. Use the "D" drive for your projects and audio.

Also, the 3.1.1 patch won't recognize that i have 3.1 so it won't install.

yeah, what's up with that? I'm having the same problem. Went through a period of uninstalling/installing/re-partitioning/etc...and at some point the 3.11 decided it wouldn't install any more. It tells me I need to install the 3.1 patch first, which I have done several times over...but no luck?

Anyone know how to get around that?

Have a look in your registry at the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Cakewalk Music Software/SONAR Producer/3.0 key. Check that the InstallDirectory value is set correctly (and correct it if not).

    Hello,

Thanks for the tip, but what is the correct value? I am comfortable working within the registry, but have not yet had reason to change any values.

P.S.( This forum rocks!!! The info I have been able to get has saved me weeks if web research. Serious thanks to everyone.

It should be the path to the folder where you have SONAR installed. On a default installation this will be:
    C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\SONAR 3 Producer Edition
