Hi Greekmac,

Yes, with the practicalities of budget it seems like you will get the best value or usefulness from the new mic and it will a great option for you to get experience with all your work. We are lucky good mics are affordable.

I also agree with the idea of singing out into a bigger room the way the others described. It seems fashionable to sing in small room... but it is far easier to get a natural sound in a bigger room. No matter what size room you have... use the big part of it. :-)

best,
mike

"Also - with the modern plug-ins you don't necessarily need a pre-amp."

I disagree.

:-)

You are of course using a preamp of some type with the microphone... and of course the condenser mic has a second underappreciated pre amp built in to it as well.

Maybe I stated this wrong.

Of course you need a pre-amp or audio device to plug your mic into and create a signal for your DAW. You don't necessarily need a traditional "mic pre" to add color to the signal.  You can print totally dry.  I record direct without any pre-amp coloring.  I use plug-ins for for pre-amp modeling exactly like I use Pod Farm for guitar amp modeling.  It is personal preference, but this guy is on a budget and my advice was 1) get a decent mic 2) make sure the recording environment doesn't interfere with a good recording.  You can always add a real tube mic pre to the signal chain.  A good mic pre could cost hundreds.  His money is better spent on a mic first.

best,

Any kind of room will produce it's own character, reflections and reverb.  If it sounds good then it is good.  Once you print this room character along with your voice you cannot edit it out.  If you sing into a closet full of clothes, for example, to dampen as much of the room as you can, you will get a truer recording of your voice and you can experiment with adding different kinds of reverb to the dry signal to find the sound you are looking for.  Maybe you find that the best for the song is a Small Room, maybe a big room?  When you are just starting out it is hard to know exactly what you want.

If you have the time and patience to try several different environments that's great.  In my case, I'd rather print dry and create the environment that fits the song post recording.  Again, it's personal preference.

Good luck,
Geno
