you get masking effects on certain mixes: when you solo instruments, you don't hear it, and then put them all together and you've got a mess.

the point of mixing, is to get the whole thing to work together.

now, i think Lajoie's method is perfect, for beginner mixers.

it's so complicated, mixing, that having a simple formula to START with, is probably a good idea.


but once you've gotten to the point where you can recognize frequencies, and then recognize BUILDUP of frequencies, then KNOW which instruments you can eq to get rid of buildup without ruining their signature sound, ALL WHILE maintaining your "IDEA" of the perfect mix for the song and band, then all bets are off for a 'formula'.
