Trying to emulate a sound...

I am trying to emulate a particular keyboard sound sound that I hear on a recording.  Is there a forum for that?

Thanks,

Maybe the "Techniques" forum or "Software" forum...What is the sound you're looking for?

It's sort of a DX-7 sound that has a strong element of chime/bell, in the attack.  It also has a fairly pronounced chiff (a flute term that describes the "ch" sound at the beginning of a flute note).  The problem is that it is exceptionally transparent and bellish, but without the annoying overtones that some bell sounds produce.  Using Dimension Pro, I can get a little close, but not close enough.  It is one of the most attractive ballad sounds I have ever heard.  Used sparingly with piano or electric piano added to give the sound body when needed, it produces tracks of great power and clarlity, without become mundane or overbearing.  I can provide a sample is interested in helping.  I have an old Korg T2 that has some similar sounds, but they all seem so two dimensional...

If you want to hear the song that uses this sound go to http://www.billygaines.com/soundClips.html and listen to the "He'll Find A Way" track.  It's not the best example, because the sample is taken from the middle of the song where the keyboard sound is in a fairly dense mix, but near the end of the short sample, you will hear it come out.  At the beginning of the song, it is by itself, but I don't have it with me at work today.  I can't get to iTunes from work, but there may be a better example of the beginning of the song there under the artist Billy Gaines.  It is also probably on Youtube, but I can't get there either.

    Thanks,

might have something simular sounding but you'll have to use sfz or sfz+

failing that NI fm8 can support dx7 (imports also) , but not a cheap option

I'd like to listen to that clip but Christian music causes me to burst into flames.

Your description of the sound is definitely a Korg type sound (the characteristic "chuff" in the attack). Have you tried recording the "two dimensional" sound that you have and processing it to give it some life?

I use the Korg Legacy Collection and the Wavestation is full of the kind of thing you are looking for.

Definitely a DX7 or a software emulation such as the FM8 available from Native Instruments...The DX7 had a very distinctive sound on some of its standard presets...That sound is one of them...

EDIT: I only had to listen to about two bars to nail that one...Even though the clip was crappy sounding and the keyboard isn't that dominant DX7 jumped out at me immediately...

Of course, for all we know the sound is a layered combination of more than one sound source. The DX7 did the bell like tone thing better than anything else, but I don't remember it being good at chuffing.

    nprime,

You could be right...You could add "chuffing" to a DX7's attack but it's been years since I actually played the "real thing"...Without hearing a quality clip with some dominant keyboard part I probably spoke too soon...But there's DEFNITELY some DX7 (or simulation) in that keyboard and it's the dominant layer...

I don't really hear chuffing (my first thought was Chuff+Bell? D-50!) but listening to the track - it's a DX7. (Edit: no longer sure. I think there is some layering in there as well. It might be D-50 or a combination...)

I have FM8. I might browse through the extensive patch library, and if I hear a match I could sample a note spread. What range are you interested in? (Be conservative please).

    Stickman,

I was looking at the FM8, but I can't quite justify the cost for this one tune...  If you find something close, just record a scale or something simple and let me know where I can listen to it.  Thanks.

Don't get your hopes up... I haven't found anything like it yet and I will probably give up.
