nice cover, pluto!

your mix, tho;  you're compressed/limited hard but your output level is low.  i looked at it in sonar and it looks like a brick (no dynamics) but the output level never got higher than -3dB.  my suggestion is to cut way back on the compression/limiting and let it breathe a little.

Yeah the vocals did have a slight Lemmy sound to them. Suited the track well though.

This is a fantastic cover, full of energy and the mix you've done has a sound that captures that era well.

Top stuff.

Thanks blipp, glad u liked it!

A song I love to play. I think you did a great job of it. Terrific attention to detail. The downside: now the notion of covering it myself has been rendered superfluous. Well done.

Great job...sounds good,,,funny how the vocals seem split...left and right...but it's ok
Thanks for stopping by montezuma.  Yeah if you listen to the original version by the Beatles, if i can recall, the vocals are wide, split left/right.  Thanks for posting.

I like it a lot!

Just a couple of things one minor, one major.

The minor: the piano solo isn't rhythmically correct.  I believe the 5th not comes in late.

The major: in the guitar break, the guitar is playing in the wrong key.

Listening to "I Am the Walrus",  really sounds good pluto, though the mix at least on my system seems a bit out of wack.  The higher register instruments (violin? mostly) pretty much drown out everything else, I can barely hear the cello's, bass guitar etc.  Vocals are really good, you really did a great job with this, just need to bring up the bottom end instruments, and uppers down.

Love your twists on this cover: Wide-panned vox and center guitar.

Great work!

Probably should have done a separate post for the Walrus ...
Yes this is definitely well done. I love the way you stay true to the song and all of it's intricacies, yet own the production.   Great Great work.  Such a marvelous endeavor.  Bravo!!!!!!   I'm really looking forward to hearing some of your other talents ...

Listening to some of your stuff!!! Really fine work!
Really like clouds.. very full sounding, Nebula is nice as well - kind of a Tom Petty's something in the air type tune.

Thanks, Phillip!  It's usually the other way around huh - wide-panned guitar and center vox.  Thought I'd change it up a bit in regards to the vocs on Birthday.  Did you check out Walrus?  Just curious.

Tap...  Yes, i tried to stay true to the original "Walrus" Beatle version but with a twist  of my own to mark it my version.

Hmmm... "Something in the Air" feel regarding my original track Nebula?  Good observation, I've always liked that Tom Petty tune.

Thanks for the great review man, much appreciated and glad you liked it!

hi lackluster... sorry, no original in Walrus.  I did however use a tiny 1 second piece at 2:01 and the 1 second laugh at 2:43.  Total original in song, 2 seconds.  Other than that, i did everything on it.
Glad you liked it.

Re:Beatles - I Am the Walrus (cover) 2010/06/06 14:02:51 (permalink)
Hi, Pluto - This thread caught my eye, being a die-hard Beatles fan.  Now I've heard the covers - really nice stuff!

In "Birthday" the piano isn't sitting well, as has been noted.  It sounds like you purposely phrased it so the rhythm is different from the original, and that's fine, but the instrument sounds odd in the mix.

The bridge around 2:00--wow, the guitar is Definitely in the wrong key, as someone mentioned.  It was a choice perhaps, but it really tweaked my ears when I heard it, like suddenly two different songs were playing at the same time or something.

"Walrus" has some extreme imbalances in the mix.  Some really nice, accurately reproduced strings work is too often lost, and the descending screeching sound in the chorus is way way too soft.

Obviously a lot of work went into these.  You probably aren't up for re-mixing at this point, but your "Walrus" tracks could sound so much better with new balancing, - and that guitar bridge in "Birthday"---that's a baffling wrong-key moment in an otherwise great recording, wish you could fix that.

Hi rbowser!  Thanks for stopping by.  Good points all around.  If i ever decide to revisit the tracks, will look into it, but for now, i won't be putting anymore work into them.  I put your suggestions in the folder associated with the tracks.  Thanks for the good word!
