DONT get the EMU PCI unit- I dont know how well the PCI-e unit runs. If it runs good, that would be awesome because the hardware is really good on those units. Problem is, their drivers arent as good and so a person ike you doing only midi recording needs low latency settings, period...

Usb units, unless you spend some hefty cash, are not going to perform as well as PCI units. Neither will firewire units(and the chipset factor, etc. is another variable with firewire units).

Plenty of motherboards still have PCI slots, and Im sure they will carry one for a long time, just like serial ports havent gona away after all this time, or analog video ports.

It is safe, and the best option for you to get an echo mia midi or m-audio !P 192 unit at the lower price you want to pay. You simply wont do better and you will be able to do what you want to do with these pieces of hardware.

You dont need preamps, you dont need usb portability, so just go PCI and be rest assured you will get the performance you need.

Excuse me for saying this: If you don't know how well it runs, how can you say "Don't buy it"?

What basis are there to condemn without evidence?

You do say "DONT get the EMU PCI unit- I dont know how well the PCI-e unit runs."

I am not buying nor selling, though, but I believe the PCI-e better be proven technology.

Good inquiry and I see where you're coming from.

I said I dont know about the PCI-E unit because I dont know how it runs. That is why I said I hope it works better and didn't say not to buy that one.

But, the PCI unit- I have a good friend that is really good with computers, builds them for clients once in a while, has built many himself. Him and I have built a few together.

He tried the emu stuff (PCI) because is well priced. They sound good, but they tend to have problems at low latencies-

This is why I said what I did.

Hi Lance, and thanks for replying.

I believe that it is OK to relate personal experience, but in this case I feel it is rather limited to say "DONT get the EMU PCI unit", so thanks for clarifying.

Therefore, I'd like to quote from a casual look at the Sweetwater site, via Google, on an actual recent owner of one such card, with a very opposite consideration:

Better than expected
I had heard rumors that the drivers that come with Emu products aren't always up to snuff, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that were zero problems with installation and I haven't had any trouble getting the latency down to negligible time. Everyone knows the A/D on this thing is superb, the only question mark was the software and drivers, but those have proven to work flawlessly (with Vista 32 at least). At this price, the sound quality offered by this card is an absolute steal. Snatch this up while you still can!

And here's some more info at the same site:

yes the gina 3G has some very decent preamps actually-

I like to use my outboard preamp, but the gina pre's are very transparent.

It works really well-

Yeah sure Lance. If I got serious I would be looking at more gear, such as a preamp. This just looked nice and simple and versatile.

Well that is encouraging, but it is for the PCI-e unit, so Lance's stance still seems reasonable. Wish I knew what OpSys the reviewer was using, what MoBo etc. One thing about drivers and stuff (as lance's comment about Firewire indicates ) is that what works superbly under one setup will crash and burn under another.

I have started an avalanche here.

I am not even going to get into the whole BB and blues thing! Confused enough already

That would be sweet if the PCI-e unit performs well at low latencies. I might consider getting one.

Well I may dive in and be the guinea pig. But it will take a while. I am very rusty and I will need some time to get everything set up to the level that I can make an informed opinion.
