New VS-100 User - Prerecorded songs for learning the parts

I play in a cover band. What is the easiest way to drop a song from Itunes or my CD into Sonar (I have both the VS & Ver 7 XL software). I only bought the VS 100 to practice songs (I would like to loop sections to learn the parts). I would be good if I could record my guitar part on a adjacent track to check if I got the part down correctly? Do I have to have to worry about timing issues or using the tempo meter?

I don't know if this will be of any help, but I am basically doing the same thing that you are doing.  I build a backup track in Band in a Box.  Then, I save the track as a midi file and bring it into Sonar VS using Cakewalk TTS-1.  That allows me to manipulate the midi instruments as separate tracks.  I find it works well for practicing.  I can record along with the TTS-1 track to check that my playing is the way that I want it before I play with the band.  I have found this to be a pretty good way to work.

If I understand you correctly, you send a prerecorded song into Band in the Box, use it to change it into a format that Cakewalk will recognize (midi) then bring it into Sonar (in my case Home Studio) and then review and/or play along with it?
