Audio track playing, but NO SOUND heard
For the last two days, I can't audibly hear any Sonar audio tracks, even when it is the only program open, even after reboot. I see the meters in Sonar indicating I should be hearing something, but no sound at all. To simplify my troubleshooting, I opened a new Sonar project, imported a stereo wav drum track. Just outputting through my basic on board sound card. This hasn't been a problem before. Here's a screenshot. http://screencast.com/t/OThkMTNh Sonar's help file suggests checking Window's "sound recorder" accessory (Start-All Programs-Accessories-Entertainment-Sound Recorder). It offers the opportunity to open a wav file and play to check audio. 1. With Sonar closed, I opened a wav file, it played. 2. With Sonar open, same wav file, no sound. The Transport shows the Audio Engine is turned on. If I have Sonar closed, and open some other program like audacity or windows media player, I can play and hear an mp3 or audio file. If this helps...screenshots of my settings. I would say the computer's built-in SoundMax card is the problem. I've never managed to squeeze Sonar sound out of a built-in card that was acceptable. You have it on WDM mode which I've definitely never gotten sound out of. Once I got the almost requisite sound interface with Asio drivers, then everything's worked fine ever since. Randy B.

Thanks for responding, Randy. I've just been using the SoundMax card temporarily which has worked up until yesterday. Tried ASIO just now, but Sonar doesn't find anything that relates to ASIO so I end up with no inputs/outputs. So, back to WDM for now...unfortunately, with no sound.

Hi, right, Sonar couldn't find Asio drivers for that card because it doesn't have them. I don't know why it was working before - I don't see how it could have ever worked. Sorry! Randy B.

Check your master bus and make sure it's set to the right outputs. I've been tripped up by that more than once *blush* ew

Perhaps not what you want to hear - but I would recommend biting the bullet and going for an external audio interface. I have never had much luck with Sonar and built-in soundcards myself. Good Luck!

Thanks ew and gfeel. Master bus is good, and I might need to do the interface thing. Bummer, as it worked before...for my limited needs.

chamlin Any other ideas out there? Did you check what EW pointed out?--to see if your Master is actually pointed to the card? But built-in cards, and WDM mode--yikes, really - people who've squeezed sound out of that kind of set up must be magicians. You gotta get yourself an Asio interface/card replacement. Randy B.

This has been said before: Trying to run Sonar with an on board sound card is like taking a Ferrari V12 engine and putting it on a lawnmower. You spent all that money on the program, surely you can budget $100 for an interface to hear it properly.

Yes, I hear you guys. I will happily go get an interface. QUESTIONS: 1. Since this is an all-use PC, will the onboard soundcard be disabled? Or will that still be used for hearing tunes on windows media player, or hearing basic online stuff? 2. My headphones plug in to the front panel of the PC to listen at night. On an interface, where would the headphones get plugged in?

Did you try MME? 1. depends on how you set it up. 2.depends on where the headphone connection is.

But when it's parked here in my home studio, it works for me to have videos, MP3s, everything play through my sound system via the same interface I use in Sonar. Nice to have that volume knob right there next to my mouse, nice to hear the best sound possible for all sources. 2 - My interface is typical. There's a headphone jack right there in front along with all the other ports and knobs. However, I have my interface's output going to an amplifier, and I use the headphone jack on the amp. Randy B.
