PreSonus FireStudio Mobile playback issues in Sonar 8.5 PE

Hi,

I just got a PreSonus FireStudio Mobile and am having a playback issue in Sonar. I searched the forums and saw a lot of old posts about people having issues with PreSonus products. Are these issues resolved at all? Anyone having success with the FireStudio Mobile in Sonar 8.5 PE?

My problem is when I play back any audio, there is a bad crackling or clicking sound. It doesn't seem like the audio itself is actually stuttering, more like there is a bad noise that gets superimposed on top of it. Audio playback is fine outside of Sonar.
I'm using the latest FireStudio WDM drivers (v3.5.2) and Sonar Producer Edition 8.5.3. I am using a dedicated PCI firewire card with a TI chipset. The card is the ADS PYRO PCI 64R2 API-315. My system is an Intel i7 950 running Windows 7 64-bit.

Changing the I/O buffer size in Sonar or using the FireStudio's various 'Safe' modes doesn't help. I tried switching to the legacy Windows firewire controller driver and that didn't work either.

Anyone experienced this issue or have suggestions for settings that will work? If PreSonus still has issues with Sonar and it's not worth the trouble to fix this, I'll go back and get a MOTU or something, but I want to see if I can get it to work.

Thanks!

I'm using the latest FireStudio WDM drivers (v3.5.2) and Sonar Producer Edition 8.5.3. I

Try ASIO driver mode

Changing the I/O buffer size in Sonar

Those settings are not the ones you need to change. You need to change your sound card's driver setting. Not sonar's Buffers.
In WDM mode, you use the latency slider  and in ASIO driver mode, you click the ASIO panel to get to your asio control panel and then change the buffers in there

If the shop will exchange it for another product I would do so now. I had huge problems with Presonus which has a history of not working with Sonar. It's a shame because their products are very good, BUT when I spoke with a senior employee there he told me at that time they had spent over a year trying to resolve the driver issues with Sonar. Such a driver issue should have been resolved by any competent development team inside a few weeks at tops.
I also found their Support to be unreliable and non-responsive - when they did contact me I knew more about it than they did!
To me, they displayed an incompetence that told me to get rid of the thing ASAP and go to a company with good R&D and Support departments.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

CJ - the ASIO drivers did the trick with respect to the playback issue.

But I am still having other problems with the unit and will be taking the advice of wetdentist and nickclube. These drivers are totally flaky. If anyone has a recommendation for a device that has good drivers but doesn't cost as much as RME, let me know.

I've been trying to get Sonar and a Firestudio (2626) to behave properly at low-latency for about 18 months now (I know, I know:  but I don't record every day and tend to stubbornly believe that anything that's successful for somebody just needs to be worked at until it's successful for you).  I keep getting pretty close to flawless operation (I'm actually getting trouble-free mixing/playback at this point *knock on wood*), but every time I think I've achieved it, I find some other issues getting in the way.

The last big hurdle for me is the low-latency monitoring during record.  My last attempt actually got a solid capture, but the monitoring itself had one or two instances of stilted playback.  I'm pretty sure the problem lies not with Presonus OR Cakewalk exclusively, but rather somewhere in between.  Based on my research and testing, it looks like both products tend to have issues specifically with each other, but work great with other products.

The real sad part, I think, is that we'll likely never see the kind of co-operation between companies to resolve this, since Presonus has their own DAW now, and Roland owns Cakewalk.

To conclude the story, I got an M-Audio ProFire 2626 and it worked right out of the box with no effort.
