please help with using a midi controller to to control effects plugin in real time

I'm at a loss with what I'm doing wrong.  I'm trying to use an edirol pcr-m50 to control an effect.  namely the Kore Player with "the Finger" effects loaded into it. 
 
I got this to work a little less than a year ago, but have started to project back up but now cannot control the effect anymore.  I believe I used ACT and must have hit some magic button to make it talk to each other. 
 
Can someone please just point me to a turtorial or tell me how they use a midi controller to change an effects paramaters. 
 
I'm using Windows XP, SONAR 8.3.1.372
Fireface 800 soundcard
 
I seem to remember this process being easier in a previous version.  Like, right-clicking on control and choosing "midi learn" or something like that. 
 
This is killing my creativity!  Sorry, just venting.
