Next Sonar Version not until > after January 14, 2011 ...... ?
Hmmmmm................ Just got the following in an email from Cakewalk:- " ..... SONAR 8.5 nominated for 2010 TEC Awards The 26th annual TEC Award nominations are in and we are pleased to announce that SONAR 8.5 has been nominated for a TEC award in the category of Workstation Technology. Professional audio’s most prestigious awards will be hosted for the first time by NAMM, the international music products industry’s biggest trade show. The awards will be handed out on January 14th, 2011 .... " I could be wrong, but given Rolands recent world-wide email re: hardware distribution and now this TEC Award nomiation whcih isnt announced until Jan 14 2011 my guess is that we wont see Sonar 9 until after this waradhas been finalised. tomg

Could be true, I don't know why they kept the yearly schedule for so long.

IMO, they should slow down versions of Sonar anyway. By the time they get each new version working smoothly, they release a new buggy version. Stability trumps new features in professional studios.. at least in mine.

I haven't even made the jump from 8.3.whatever to 8.5 yet. I would but I can't find time to record anything lately so I'll just wait until I have more time and then I'll hop up to whatever the newest version available is. Or maybe I'll just buy into 8.5 at a discounted price if they drop it down in the next year.

I agree with the stopping the "yearly release - ready or not" approach. I only ever upgrade to a version if there's some feature that I feel I can't live without anyway, rather than feeling I must have latest version regardless. I'm on 8.3 at the moment, I'd rather see a relatively stable release and if there's some features that I think I'll use or need then I'll upgrade and hopefully be able to do it more or less on release rather than wait for the 2nd point fix like I normally do.

I couldn't give a monkey's burp what they do as long as they pay us the courtesy of telling us, THE CUSTOMERS, what they are going to do and when. Without this information we cannot plan our purchases and it will be Cakewalk who loose out. I am planning to upgrade my system massively before the UK's VAT rises in January to 20%. If its not available before then no upgrade. I will be making some major purchases before the rise and so will many UK users. Think on that one Cakewalk.

I would like to know Cakewalks plans in advance too. I would be quite happy with something like "at the moment, we plan to release a new version in the first quarter of 2011. Of course, we may have to revise this if unforseen problems occur." I quite understand if problems cause delays, but a rough idea would be useful to me.

When shifting from the annual release program they had forever almost would be wise to inform everybody. I am preparing for working full time with musicproduction beginning next year. Plan was to upgrade to Producer to get some plugins i want and to get the bugs fixed in the 8.5.3 still with next Sonar major version. This would also make it possible to get a fix or two for the usuall bugs they introduce with every new release, before I depend on Sonar as a professional tool for me. No way that I would jeopardize the daily work upgrading with a fresh release of Sonar. When I upgraded last to 8.5 it was so buggy you could not route track outputs, and master was gone and other strange stuff. Luckily the 8.5.2 patch was there the day before I upgraded, and I could fix this right away. They screwed that up for me at least. I am now buying the extra stuff I need from other vendors. If I upgrade later on I will stick with Studio version in either case. I like Sonar a lot, but Cake's strategy I cannot follow how they act.

cakewalk's not going to release information in advance on their release. it's marketing suicide. if they tell us that the release is going to be on November 5 for example; all of the sales of sonar for the last 2 months before that date will drop to near 0 - regardless of the "sale price" they put on it. so most of these people who have been upgrading in the last 2 months; $79 or $99 each - would not do it because they would wait on the new release since they know the new release date. if sales before the release drop then cakewalk's income drops. that doesn't make any sense to a marketing exec.

CW should move to a subscription basis: a yearly charge, starting whenever an item is purchased. This would mean all software could be updated when ready, without regard to specific dates. I and my clients use such software. All updates, and upgrades that occur within the subscriptions time period are included, and shipped immediately. This stabilizes the revenue stream. Now what we have is a version fee. And soon it will prolly be close to a year since the last update. Given the billions of needed fixes and feature change requests it would do EVERYONE a great service to move to a non-version time table. Fee per use/hour would also be preferred to what we have now. With a pre-paid option for machines not immediately connected to the net. This way professional studios that use the software 24/7 pay more appropriate to value the software contributes to income. I use Sonar on average twice a week. So, I currently spend between 50 cents and a 75 cents per hour of use. 'Tis fine with me. Windows costs me about 25 cents for the audio computer, since I have it on for tweaking, and other programs: the granddaughter uses dragon naturally speaking,... On my main office computer Windows 7 has cost me about 2.5 cents per hour for this past year. And I will use it for at least another year. And windows is updated weekly. Subscriptions, and pay-per-use, pricing approaches would make all of us much happier. And, I think the price should be increased. Currently Sonar costs nothing. All of the included stuff is just as valuable. How about NO included stuff for $200. And a user pack of plugs for $100. Whatever helps Roland/CW to stop the version-go-round. J

Quite a few of us have been wanting a 8.5.4 with fixes but have lived through this because we thought we knew there was a major version coming now, with these fixes. So what do we have here? Then people would upgrade now without hesitation knowing it's at least 6 month away. And current users would be happy too, getting things fixed. The worst thing of all is uncertainty, that really blocks all decisions. Now I'm even considering testing other hosts until I go professional. Looking at videogames market these games are announced well in advance, even for new versions of an existing game. Plenty reviews in gamers magazines in advance. planning to upgrade my system massively before the UK's VAT rises in January to 20%. If its not available before then no upgrade. I will be making some major purchases before the rise and so will many UK users. Seriously?! You would change your buying pattern of upkeep on your treasured recording studio based on a ~2% change in tax rate?! If the upgrade costs 100 pounds in th UK that would be a 2 pound difference. Even a starving artist could surely skip one scone for one day to offset such a terrible crushing taxation increase?! And will all of the UK really not upgrade because of a tax delta?! I thought only the Scots had a reputation for being miserly cheapskates?! LOL

I think Sonar 9 will be out sooner rather than later if they are already offering discounts on 8.5. Also I don't think they would announce Sonar 9 and NAMM when they are getting an award for 8.5 at the same time.

But I think they have tested the waters with 8.5 to see how much complaining they would receive if they charged for a point release to fix some of their problems, and get paid for it, then throw in some half baked goodies, such as the Matrix, and Session drummer 3, so not to have the community cry foul. Mid or late life point releases i believe will be charged for in some manner, moving into the future. I hope I'm wrong!

Something to the effect that your serial/license would only be good for 1 year, then you would have to pay another $200 to keep using your PC. I would never in a million years use Sonar if I had to pay per usage for the simple fact you would be locked in to using them. I've seen these type of 'contracts' with service tracking software ... it always ends up that you spend more than if you would have bought it outright ... and in the end, you still have to pay for the 'next gen' of product, on top of what you paid for your 'hourly' fee. Here's what should be done ... the company (not necessarily Cakewalk but everyone) should make sure their product works ... and keep releasing updates until it does work before they even start thinking about a new version. A big reason why bugs get through is because of corporate deadlines pushing the developers. Just let them take the time they need to make it work right. It's all about greed, and now you want to provide a steady stream for them? No thanks. I'll opt out when that day comes and dig out my old SPE4 DAW. :) Shane

:) Shane From your comments I infer: You do not pay monthly for electric and gas You do not pay monthly for housing You do not pay monthly credit card interest (a fee for use of money) You do not pay monthly car payments You do not pay monthly for health coverage You do not pay monthly/quarterly/annually for house/property/life/car insurance You do not pay monthly for phone use You do not pay for cable TV You do not attend movies, concerts,... And You do not work for anyone (including yourself) You do not expect to get paid for your time and effort You do not care if the company you work for still needs your service next month when they run out of money I know people who pay $600 per month car payments, plus $200 per month car insurance, and various maintenance costs and yet complain that their computer (with OS, office, AV,..) cost them $1000 which will be spread over at least two years. They use the car for 15 minutes twice a day, and the computer for 10 hours per day, seven days a week. This is nicely called congnitive disconnection. I call is stupid ignorance. My interest is having stuff fixed as soon as possible. If I was paying monthly for Windows, I suspect the issues with the explorer, and the lost monitor settings,... would have been fixed a year ago when the beta testers reported the problems. Businesses need to plan for expenses. If CW did not have to worry, be distracted by, do the stupid dance of tourist-season income cycles, everyone would benefit. And just as I pay more for my business phone than my resisdential service, business users of CW should pay more for the use of the software. And: since CW, and all of us users, will benefit when lots of studios are using CW products, it is in our best interest to have CW be able to FIX BUGS immediately. Quicken would never be the size of company it is now if it had only fixed and updated yearly. Greed? $180 per year for all the goodies? GREED? Time to buy a vowel. J

Unfortunately for software companies, I see little point in upgrading when the current version works fine for me. I suspect a lot of people feel the same way. I only recently changed from Windows XP to Windows 7. (Vista had such a bad press I swore I was going to adopt Linux instead! But then 7 came along and I forgave M$. Now I really like 7.) Similarly, I only recently changed from Sonar PE v6 to v8.5.3. Before that I was using v2.2. So I'm an infrequent upgrader. As every new version of Sonar seems to involve learning a new way of doing things, or arbitrary changes to the user interface, it's not productive to upgrade when you can get by with the old version. As others have said, bug fixes and stability are a lot more important to me than new features. Actually I really don't need any new features, as I don't use most of the existing ones. Roll on v8.5.4 if it's coming! But I shall ignore v9.0.0.

I'm 100% against a subscription model. I upgrade only when I want to and when I feel it's worth my while for the $$$, and I don't want to be locked in to yearly updates I don't need or desire. And you're unlikely to get advance information from any vendor in a competitive industry, unless a direct competitor just announced/released a new version with a desirable feature and the vendor wants to talk about vaporware to keep pace. And I also see no correlation between awards ceremonies and product releases. Companies are not going to delay a product release just for that reason. Most companies don't even seem to bother waiting for the trade shows to release new products anymore - thanks to the web, they can announce them whenever they're ready or whenever it suits them.

Beagle lol - well believe what you like. I just upgraded for $79 download from S8PE to S8.5PE myself a few days ago. I'm not the only one that's done that, regardless that you think it's "smart" or not. personally I think it's smart because there's not likely going to be another free version so this is the most stable that 8.5 is going to get. plus, I got it cheaper than you did if you bought it when 8.5 first came out. so who's the smart one here? Well, usually the discount thingy is immediately before a new version release. Those doing this in july are not treated well by Cake if you ask me. They have to pay for upcoming releases that used to be sept-okt. So time will tell how smart you were? If Cake suprises everyone with a release this year it's not you. You will have to pay for the new release again(unless otherwise stated on purchase). That policy kind of pissed me off and putting Cake in a bad spot in my world. But it's common with different hardware products when a new model is coming out. I guess that is the way it is, but I don't like it either way fooling people to think they made a bargain.
