That's the strategy I used for the past decade, and it worked well.  However, both my DAW and main PC are old, and I can't really afford to upgrade both.  So I decided to buy one fast computer to replace the DAW and main PC both. 

Hopefully even if the non-music apps slow it down a bit, it still won't slow down enough to compromise my ability to make music.
