I have also seen on my desktop when working with dedicated USB interface that is directly hardwired to the motherboard 'seems' to be the most reliable connection versus using the case manufacturer's ports on the front side. Your mileage will vary.
If you must use a USB port hub, make darn sure you have it powered and not trying to use the USB under it's own minimal voltage. If your desktop is used in real world applications: printer, scanner, thumb drives and so on, try unplugging them during your DAW sessions.
