Midi Box/Controller Noise

Hi Everyone,

I am having issues with my Midiman 3x8 midi switchbox that's been driving me crazy. I get get a very annoying click on any key press, mod wheel or slightest knob movement on my keyboard controller. It does this with all controllers and this is my second box.

At first I thought it would be a 64bt OS/32bit hardware problem but it can't be because there is no software or driver to install with the box. It's just a "pass though" hardware device. My DAW is picking up the MIDI just fine. If I output the MIDI from the DAW to a hardware synth it does not produce the clicks....seems to only on input.
Any Idea?

where is the click coming from?  your speakers out of the saffire?

well - there's got to be a connection to the saffire/monitors somewhere.  have you tried isolating that?

I would assume that one or more of your synths are connected to the saffire via audio cables.  disconnect them one at a time until that goes away.  then figure out if it's the synth output the cables or the saffire causing the problem.

the problem is not likely the midi thru box - there's no audio in it and it's not connected to the computer except maybe thru MIDI cables into the saffire (which is likely the way you have it).  but there's no audio connection.  the only way it could be the midi box would be if you're causing a problem on the ground connection on the MIDI input to the saffire.

but I'd suspect the audio cables first.

the only way it could be the midi box would be if you're causing a problem on the ground connection on the MIDI input to the saffire.

Thanks for the reply! I'm sorry, I forgot to mention a crucial detail. I'm using Soft Synths only. No external audio at all. I'm curious about the Midi Input Ground. Could you explain a bit further?

Btw, I listed to your songs on your website. Are those yours or another artist? Either way, I just wanted send my compliments!

    Thank you

    Hi Rock,
If you're using softsynths only and don't have anything except MIDI connected to the saffire for input, then I'd say it may be a ground issue in the MIDI box.  You'd have to open the MIDI box and troubleshoot inside it in order to figure out the problem.

Pin 2 is the shield, you could have problems with shielding, you'd have to check the shield pins against each other and against the other pins and against the case.

Pin 4 is the signal.  the shield should ring completely open against this pin on all connectors.

Pin 5 is the signal return.  this is the ground for MIDI system.  depending on the way this box is wired, it may or may not be connected to the shield at pin 2.  A good design, IMO, will keep them separate and that way the shield will not be connected to this pin on all connectors.

Unfortunately, this could also be a problem with the saffire's MIDI input.

the FIRST thing I would do before attempting the above, however, would be to verify if it is the box or the saffire or one of your MIDI controllers.  If you disconnect all controllers from the box except one does the problem still exist?  if it does, connect another one and disconnect that one and see if it still exists.  if it does, then that rules out the MIDI controllers.

then bypass the box and connect one of your controller directly to the saffire MIDI port.  if the problem is still there then it looks like the saffire is the problem.  if the problem isn't there, I'd check more than one controller directly in the saffire just to be sure.

this way you rule out everything except the problem.  if the problem goes away when you plug your controllers directly into the saffire then you've discovered for certain that it is in the box.

at this point, I'd look open the box and look at the connectors and verify the connections I listed above.

thanks for the props on the songs!  some of them are original, some are covers.  glad you liked them!
