Nice one! Starts off Beck-like, then Beck takes some crystal meth and goes crazy. Get some more realistic drums in there and it would go up a notch.

Tricky of you to entice us with mellow and then BAM.

Very nice work and great mix.

The only crit I have is on the mellow parts your vibrato is kinda frantic, like you just can't wait to get to the fast part.  A nice smooth controlled vibrato would be in order there.

Hey Mark. There is some good songwriting going on here for this genre and I really think your hard hitting style blended with this style of guitar instrumental could be something unique. I read a bit above and I agree that it almost feels like you know exactly where this should be going. Have the skills to take it there. But somehow your head/heart wasn't into it. I saw satch in the tags and it reminded me of an interview with him I read some years ago where he said in ballads like this he tries to give every note some sort of articulation even if it's just very minor. That's one of the few things this tune needs. There's a bit of wierdness with the intro chord and keys. I like the tones picked tones and keys but I don't think they work for the whole tune.  I usually don't get too detailed out here but ironically on this tune where your not really into it I feel (probably not alone on this) it could be a real gem. In the end I can completley relate though. I got more than a few that I just gave up on and could probably be the poster child for "meh'" Worth revisiting at the very least cuz it's cool as hell.

Cheers for the further comments.
Adji - yeah i need to somehow get a better cleaner but still overdriven tone from GR.

Yeah its difficult mate, I haven't managed yet. I had more success running a smooth drive pedal in front of my interface as a kind of pre amp into Guitar Rig (well actually I used Amplitube but its the same thing).
Enjoyed it though mate.

Adji - yeah i need to somehow get a better cleaner but still overdriven tone from GR.

James - i don't split the signal, it's just monitored thru GR4 and Sonar. not sure how, cos even at 128 samples the RTL is around 10ms on my Audiofire...i can get it lower at 64 samples but it's not as stable like that, that puts the RTL down to around 8ms i think (must have a significant safety buffer)

Josh - hey bro it'd be an honour to collab with you. i know there's the thing with Bobby but i'd find it hard to put some riffs forward for that as i tune to C standard; once i get a 7 string it'll be a lot easier. so yeah, you know where to get me!

I've never tuned to C before. That's LOW! My strings would be floppin' and clacking all over the place. And already too sloppy of a player for that kind of studliness...

Anyway, I'll send you an mp3 of the guitar riff, you tell me what you think. It will be naked, not dressed up, no drums. You'll have to 'hear' the music.

For a 'little instrumental', that got quite epic didn't it?  Lots to enjoy in there Mark, some lovely phrasing and melodies in the first section. Really liked the part from about 2:40 - 3:00 with the chunky lead riffs going on behind the main guitar. I just shake my head in awe when the sweep picking starts, I never even got started on that kind of stuff.

Those entry chords are just beautiful.  This is different than what I expect to hear from you and I like it.  This kind of song can keep me intrigued and listening for a long time.  Congrats, Mark.  If I had to do any crit (which I'm not good at) I would say the drums could have been a little heavier.  That could just be personal preference, though.  GREAT changes in this tune.  A real trip!

wow, looking thru this thread everyone likes it. Maybe I'm going wacko or something but the main fuzz guitar seems really out of tune to me. Nice track though. Like the E. Piano in the intro. Cool. Maybe run the guit thru V-vocal??

  THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT SUCKS YOU IN AND YOU CAN NOT STOP LISTENING!

This is freaking awesome Mark! Dang man, I wish I could play as well as you can, I have so many excuses as to why I can't and it all boils down to me not being as good as you are. But, You provide some great inspiration, and I love hearing the music.

Thanks for posting,

Bobby

I had the same thought James had.  :-)  'Little Instrumental' indeed.  :-)  Wonderfully played of course, and the arrangement is great.  I don't have a clue how you guys can play that fast and well either.  I love it!!

Hey, Mark,

Very nice, smooth instrumental with a lot of tasty little snippets and a warm, full lead tone!  I also really enjoyed the tempo changeups and the shimmery rhythm parts behind the great solos.

Very cool, have a good one, buddy!

Excellent piece Mark. Enjoyed this very much.
It helped me relax after a hectic day at work. Cant say that often about your tracks.

Best
