In terms of technology, is this in the same neighborhood as the Variax system by Line 6?

I think it is Rolands answer to the Variax system, although line 6 focuses on guitar tones over synth tones.. The new G-5 VG guitar  http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StratVGBLK?utm_source=none&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=none&gclid=CN22wJnc3K8CFSWFQAodnnii_A

is their answer to the JTV guitars. No installation of any kind necessary on that guitar and it talks well with the GR-55.

I use a JTV 69 and after the latest 1.8 firmware upgrade the acoustics are killer. Click my link" my music" below to hear a Martin on " By The Sea'..I'm still working this mix so don't listen too closely to the way the parts  clash.

Also at about 3:50 on the following link you can hear all the acoustic models  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpWUkD46qQg

I don't think Roland has tones this good yet IMO, and this is just the acoustic tones . The other tones are killer too.

The nice thing is now we have choices. If I were guitar player looking to also integrate synths without a synth player I might look over the GR55. I think Line 6 has an edge in the area of guitar tones compared to Roland, but these things can change in the time it takes to write a firmware upgrade.

The one thing that line 6 doesn't offer yet are mods for a typical guitar the way Roland does. I hope they do offer this in the future, but maybe they never will because their system is more heavily integrated into the guitar. A lot more than just a hex pickup. But I can plug into anything independently of any outboard gear including the POD and get the same les Paul and Fender tones.

As a midi controller, I've been looking at the You Rock Guitar as I'd love to play my soft synths without a keyboard and from all the video's/reviews I've seen.....I'm going to give it a shot. They've also updated their firmware and the YRG is going for something like $150.

For the guitar tones, I'm with you Starise on the JTV....to have 20+ high quality tones in one guitar, that would be perfect for my needs in the home studio setup.  I've actually started savings plan to get this...lol.

Mesh, I was unimpressed with the You Rock. YMMV.

I remember you saying you returned it and had problems when tracking? What were the actual issues you had with it?

i just picked up a GR-30 w/ GK-2A the other day on Craigslist. and while i found that 90% of the internal sounds BLOW, they were not what i was really interested in. i was intent on finding out how well i could play my soft synths, such as Z3TA+ 2 and Massive, etc. totally blown away by how well the GK-2A responds, and haven't been this excited about new possibilities in some time. mainly, i want to be able to use this live, but haven't been able to figure out yet how to get the sounds that are being made by my computer/guitar to be sent back to the GR-30 (and over-ride the internal sounds) so that they can pump out of my keyboard amp. is MIDI OX the answer?

I don't know enough about the GR/GK or MIDI OX to give advice on how to send the signal back to the guitar, but why not just plug the output of the audio interface into the keyboard amp?

thanks Greg. it looks like that is what i will have to do, because i totally forgot that what i was hoping to do is impossible (sound from Z3TA+ 2 can't travel back inside a MIDI cable to the GR-30)

3.5 Ghz AMD 6-Core/16 gigs RAM, Roland Quad-Capture, Win 10, Cakewalk by Bandlab, Komplete 10, z3ta+, Z3TA+ 2, Rapture, Maschine 2.7 (MKI & Jam), Melodyne 4 Studio, Ozone 4, Jam Origin MIDI Guitar 2, Schecter Damien Elite, Fender Sonoran w/TronicalTune Plus installed, etc
