I'm no forum software "expert" , but it's not simple from what I understand. I'm not sure if you've ever migrated a forum as huge as ours, but I'm told it's no trivial task and loss of data may indeed be inevitable due to differences in software. Imagine the outrage if accounts or posts or forum history were lost forever. And even if it's possible, I going to take a wild guess and figure people would prefer we put our efforts towards SONAR itself and providing support etc.

I use lots of forums and I have to say, other than lack of complete mobile support (although I do read the forum on my Android phone), I don't get what the big beef is with this forum software. I have no trouble reading and replying, etc. And if anyone would have a beef you'd think it would be a mod or an admin as we have to do things like combine threads, delete Spam, re-activate user acounts and reset passwords etc and basically perform many more operations using the software than a typical user.

And FWIW I think the quoting system is great once you understand it.

I've been having a problem lately where I log in to the forums and my wireless lan card and 3G wireless router will freeze and I'll have to reboot everything. Sometimes several times. It happens on 2 different PC's.

It only happens on the forums here, no other web site.

Any thoughts on that?

mmmm...what's really funny is that my email from this site to reset the password came through the day after I requested a password reset...so I'm guessing there was a cache of this waiting someplace?

@Bub...I kept getting freezes here...just on this site as well...but I'm wondering if there is not a set time to do server work....I know that today we had a number of outages due to snow coming off of hydro lines around here...

I reset your password myself manually in response to your PM. Sent you a PM about this to your "2" account.

Wish I knew Bub...I've never experienced or heard of this. Could it be some firewall situation on your router? I guess to narrow it down I would see if it happens directly plugged into your modem, bypassing your router and/or with security turned off on your router. Also what browser are you using?

For me at least (using IE or FF) on PC it's just a matter of indentation. Indent to the left is reply text and indent to the right is original text. There are buttons to move the indent right or left which has the effect of making it the quoted text or the reply text. This way it requires no code and makes multi-line replies pretty easy. Not sure if there is something hindering this on Chrome and/or Chrome on MAC.

So - my text
Seemingly your text.
My text
your text, etc...

I believe the problem with the login is related to the following 2 security updates.  I had been on the forum prior to the update and after I did the shutdown for the update to go into effect I had to do the re-login.  I also had to click the "Save Cookie" box before it would allow the login.

The following from the MS site (these numbers are for an XP Pro 64bit so other OS may have a different number)
Security Update KB2479943 and KB2481109
A security issue has been identified that could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

It's one of those Mifi 3G wireless routers. There's no way to plug in to it. It happens with IE and Firefox. Shut me down 5 times tonight.

It happens with and without Windows firewall and the Mifi firewall active. Does it on XP and Win 7 x64.

It doesn't happen if I use an application to hide my IP but that makes everything run painfully slow.

Trying Google Chrome now to see if that helps.

Re:OT Forum question 2011/03/12 08:22:14 (permalink)
This particular forum software relies heavily on JavaScript to operate as intended. JavaScript is not run at the server level, it is run on the users computer. Every browser handles JavaScript a little differently even though there are suppose to be standards.

Internet Explorer is the arguably the worst for handling JavaScript, and is extremely vulnerable to MS Updates (more than the other browsers are) because it is an integral part of the Operating System.

  • The loss of login means the cookie has been disturbed. Usually you can just log back in again to reset it, but if that is failing, you may need to find the old cookie and delete it first. If it is a Microsoft update causing the grief, you may need to wait for them to patch that problem.
  • If you are having a problem with a particular browser, try another. Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome - these are all free downloads and easy installs on a PC. You'll have similar choices on a Mac, but of course Safari is the default rather than IE.
Since the last Microsoft updates, my IE has lost every login to every site I use it in. That problem is most certainly related to an MS update. IE is having a hard time remembering, but Firefox is doing just fine - so I'll stick to that for now.

Bub:
I've never seen the problem you are having - that's very odd. Do you have any way to bypass the router altogether to make sure that is the source of the problem? If you know for certain it is the router, have you checked for a Firmware update? Aside from a Firewall, routers are suppose to be very transparent, and if that one is not - I would be be asking them why! The only difference between this forum and others is it's heavy use of JavaScript. JavaScript should not matter to a router.

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

I'm no forum software "expert" , but it's not simple from what I understand. I'm not sure if you've ever migrated a forum as huge as ours, but I'm told it's no trivial task and loss of data may indeed be inevitable due to differences in software.

The creation of the new forum for X1 would have been the ideal opportunity to slowly migrate to new forum software with zero risk of losing any data because there was no data yet! (Leave the old forums on the current software, use the new software for the X1 forum). Btw, because the search feature is so abysmal, data history is not as relevant as it might be.

You could even have just re-created all the forums with the new software and locked all the old forums but leave them available for searching (and access to messages, contact books etc). It isn't exactly rocket science to migrate to new software.

No software or changes have been made to the forum server whatsoever is what they tell me. These are pretty technical people FWIW.
If they were really that technical they would be managing Unix/Linux/FreeBSD/OpenBSD web servers. Not Microsoft.
And they would have long advised management to get proper forum software.

I don't get what the big beef is with this forum software.
One obvious one: Your mailbox is always full Brandon. But how about for instance the way that vBulletin automatically names an URL link with the title of the page that is being linked? How about that this crappy forum software ALWAYS resizes images even when they fit perfectly within the post? (And thus making everything blurry). How about the fact that the forum regularly throws out error pages. (This is not browser dependant). It is the most CPU intensive forum of all the forums I visit. Although I clearly understand how to quote in this forum , the number of misquoted messages attests to how unintuitive the interface is.

Etc etc etc

Seriously, this forum software is complete crap and it reflects badly on Cakewalk, a technology company, that they use it.

That is interesting - as Google Chrome is optimized for JavaScript and JS Libraries better than any other browser out there. That would point toward some poor JavaScript programming on the forum software - or "spaghetti" JS programming rather than using proven and well maintained libraries.

Oh here is another annoying thing with this forum software: If you refresh the forum index, it "unbolds" thread topics that you haven't read yet. Duh! I want to be able to tell at all times which thread I have or haven't read. Even if you never refresh it but just reload the page by clicking on the "SONAR X1 Producer, Studio & Essential " link at the top of the forum it will set all topics beyond a certain age (or is it the number of threads? Who knows. It is arbitrary and that sucks) as though they have been read.

The forum software is horrible on so many levels...

If you think THIS forum software is bad, check out the Presonus forums.   No navigation, No user selectable forums to include/exclude, no reading only subscribed threads, etc.

Now that's what I call bad forum software.   Good DAW, bad forum software lol.

Heh. :) No I don't read the Presonus forums. I think I will keep it that way. ;-) It is amazing all these audio companies have such bad forum software considering that hey must all have visited Gearlsutz at some point... (Gearslutz uses vBulletin).

Not quite sure what happened here...

I hadn't been receiving e-mail notifications of new posts since about this time yesterday, so this afternoon I cleared out all my cookies etc and logged back in again... still nothing.

Then about an hour ago, I suddenly received every one I'd missed since then - all 125 of them!

Now I officially know I need to spend more time with Bapu get out more

Mind you, I think 122 of those notifications were from Bapsi's posts.
