You just need to think outside the box for this to work. Simple solution really. Just provide a checkmark to lock or unlock each module. Locked modules don't scroll, unlocked models do. Keep all of the locked modules on the left (or right) side and the unlocked on the other side. Click the Control Bar and then scroll with the middle mouse wheel. Easy, elegant, quick, & cool. I like it! Me too!

I think everyone is forgetting that 8.5 had eight and a half years to develop into what it was. X1 is the first version. Give them a break. They will make changes and improvements as time goes by. I wouldn't expect any first version software to be exactly what I wanted. 8.5 is always there if I need it, but frankly, I've never been happier with Sonar, or more efficient in using it. I am excited to see what the future holds for X1.

A1MixMan I think everyone is forgetting that 8.5 had eight and a half years to develop into what it was. X1 is the first version. Give them a break. Sorry but this is non-sense. They shouldn't have replaced anything unless they had something better to replace it with. If Cakewalk didn't have enough time to fully develop all the new features then they took on too many things and/or released X1 too early. But more importantly, many things are just not well thought out. UnderTow

"I think everyone is forgetting that 8.5 had eight and a half years" I forget that too... because v8.5 was actually v9... so that's 9 years of SONAR... and it's been a long time but I think Pro Audio was pretty darn similar as well: Many of us preferred the old symbols seen above compared to the make believe 3d buttons with drop shadows that ended up being used in SONAR.... the 3d buttons seemed like bad fashion and just created visual noise. The symbols as shown above were, clear concise and did their job gracefully. I agree with Undertow's sentiment that nothing should change just to change... it should change if and when a better idea is realized. best regards, mike

meh, you gotta pull a trigger at some point. Granted, I think their small beta group precluded catching some bugs, and they had a backlash over the "new way" of doing things, but as a v1 of a new paradigm I'm not completely apopleptic about it. Of course, this update has been a long time coming, and while most of us are saying "take the time, do it right" I can't help but notice how long it's taking. I'm still a little "huh" about some of their design ideas...but what are they gonna do, consult ME on everything they want to implement? (heh heh)

UnderTow FastBikerBoy An ideal solution for me would be a tabbed view that is keyboard controllable and instantly hideable, like it currently is. The tabs could then work something like the tabbed view in the multidock where switching is instant an not 'in focus' view dependable. That would work very well for me. Come on, just tell us what you really want: You want it to be part of Screensets! Funny you should say that I was going to suggest that but didn't want people to think I'm obsessed with screensets which obviously I am aren't. But it'd be great to pick modules for each screenset and have the visibility or not of the CB included as part of a screenset. Actually that is the kind of thing I would expect to be part of ScreenSets. At least as an option... I find some of the design decisions for X1 utterly bizarre and contradictory. UnderTow I think if I only ever used one screenset I'd be agreeing with many of the complaints about the 'new' method but I just set up screensets for the job in hand and then jump back & forth as required. I'm even seriously considering ditching my second monitor, it's almost redundant now. I think they need a way of being loaded and saved individually, have I mentioned that before? I really hope they develop screensets even further in future versions. IMHO the best part of X1 by far [/screenset fanboi rave]

I know it wouldn't be a fix for everyone, but for those of us that have 2 screens, I would like to see an option to split the control bar so that it docks at the top or bottom of each screen and allows extra room for all the modules to be shown. That way I could put the lesser used modules on the second screen or the ones that just show information. Please note, that I said "option". Ron

should introduce tabs that can be highlighted and scrolled as same with smart tools but seperate for CB with inputs for your own set up. Making for a more customisable CB instead of it set in Gold.

and maybe just maybe we'll all have 1920x1080 screens I just purchased a Viewsonic 24" LCD @ 1920x1080 this weekend at CompUSA, and I now get what others have referred to with SONAR X1 and larger displays. Wow... I can actually see everything, both vertically and horizontally. What a difference from even 1600x900. I'm not sure what would work for typical laptop displays other than to shrink everything down or add tabs/scroll/whatever to switch between modules. Then agan, the laptop I'm writing on at the moment (work machine) is running at 1920x1200 so would probably display SONAR X1 just fine. :)

ribbon FastBikerBoy I could care less how little of SONAR you use... until you start advocating for hiding controls I want immediate access too. If you read the thread Mike I didn't advocate hiding controls. I think the CB although fine in idea is lacking in practicality in that large parts of it aren't visible never mind easily accessible. I stated elsewhere that I would like to see something similar to the ribbon in MS software. Hated by some I know but at least you can get to it. I'd also like keyboard shortcut control over whatever method they use including the one good part of the CB - the ability to hide it instantly. That was lacking in 8.5 as well. I thought you had the intellect to run an argument without making personal slurs, hence my post. Sibelius 7 just came out, and they've licensed the Ribbon technology from Microsoft. There are some vocal people on the Avid board who hate it, but a recent poll showed them to be in the minority. The thing which the Ribbon succeeds marvelously at is SCALABILITY. For a variety of reasons, I have a 19 inch monitor in landscape mode and a 24 inch monitor in PORTRAIT mode. The Ribbon collapses fine, based on the width of the window, to show all available controls. It's a pretty elegant soloution. Try it out if you happen to have MS Word or another Office 2007 or greater app. On a narrow, skinny window, you still get access to all your functionality, but with icons which decrease in size or get collaped under the top-level chunk icon. For my configuration, the Control Bar will not display in full on either monitor. I can't rotate my 24 inch monitor because I need to display a full 20 staff conductor's score on it in Sibelius.
