Thanks Billy. So there's still hope for me as it seems you only reworked your normal.cwt with X1 (classic, not "a"). BTW, I had a lot of peculiarities trying to move old 8.5.3 projects into X1a too ... but I gave up trying when I was getting a lot of crashes too, some of which were associated with the normal.cwt brought over from 8.5.3. Been waiting for X1b to try all this out again.

trimph1 I'd like to see how that goes ... You doing any with V-Vocal? If you're asking me .... nope, not yet. I hardly ever used it. I didn't like it much. When I did use it, it was ok -- nothing mind blowing, and I didn't have TOO many problems. It just was/is clunky design IMHO.

Less stress ;) I now have probably an entire night to redo ALL my well setup project templates -- sigh.

Billy, all my projects are either made in 8 xx or before or have been updated to X1a. I have not so far had a crash in any version of X1. I am concerned about a template from X1a causing a crash though. That should not happen. I tried this out just now loading the normal template which is an a patch version and I found no issues. It is empty with just one audio track and one MIDI track.

jamesyoyo I tried exactly what got your crash, Billy, and it wasn't until I started Play that it bombed out for me. Seems it lost my audio driver over this? I think we should all get paid vacations from CW, James ;)

So - if my suspicion about some memory issues is right (even if it's not), there are obviously conditions that can cause corruption. One issue that kept me away from X1 so long was this "out of the blue inability to save!". That was my last straw at the time. Regardless, FOR THE MOMENT, I am moving forward and testing many things out to see if X1B is ready for prime time, so to speak.

When you guys are recreating these templates, are you literally building them from scratch from the ground up or can you just load an old one in and resave it under X1b? Thanks.

My normal.cwt is easy to recreate ... so I did it fresh for X1B after discovering the problem. I'll be trying some other ones from 8.5.3 later tonight to convert and see how they go. But I have concerns of course.

But I have concerns of course. Hey Billy, I think you are onto something with this whole template thing. I got the weirdest problem that I just can't seem to figure out. I have a drum track template that I made in X1a. It works in 32 bit X1 but won't work in 64 bit. But it only kinda works. LOL! For example, if I load the template in at the start of a project created in X1 32, it works fine. If I bring the template in on a project that is in progress in X1 32, it starts to load and the whole program just shuts down and brings be back to my desktop. If I load the template in 64, it just hangs whether it's the first thing I bring in at the start, or if it's brought in while the project has already been started. If I recreate this template that doesn't work in either version of Sonar while the porject has already started, it works fine. I just can't bring the previously created/saved template in at all. The weird thing...it loads in 8.5 no matter what even though the track template was created in X1. It gives me the Sonar version warning, but loads up perfectly. I have no idea what the deal is here other than maybe recreating the template and trying to resave. What sucks about this...it's a huge template and I'm really not looking forward to doing it again with all the bells and whistles. This only seems to happen when Kontakt is in the drum track template. I've heard they have an update that came out recently, but quite a few had mentioned issues with it as well as it mentioning "anything you've done prior to this update will not be able to be used any longer" which scares me because I have some intense stuff going on. I'd definitely make the changes if I knew for sure they were going to help me, but as of now, my work is perfect while using all this stuff in 8.5 and I'm scared to death to ruin that. :(

I think there were some problems in X1 that reveal/expose new problems with older projects in general. This is anecdotal, based on my experience, but what matters to me now is moving forward to see how new/fresh projects hold up. I'm NOT going to be deleting any prior versions, so I'm not worried ;)

Oh well...good luck with the stuff you're doing. :)

SONARtist Billy, did you go from X1 or X1a to X1b ? I'm questioning because I too completely redid my normal.cwt template from scratch in X1a after I had a lot of issues (which BTW were mostly cleared up with a brand newly created normal.cwt). I really hope I don't have to go through ALL that again ... The install intructions for X1b state that X1a has to be installed before hand.

So even it had some corruption it seems. My whole point is we need to be aware of this - and see if CW finds anything more in this area that needs fixin'. There are many reasons any file could be corrupt by saving in a DAW. If there is memory corruption or any number other possibilities, a file (project/template/whatever) may "load" but get all gunked up in memory. I'm not a programmer -- but this sure smells like what happened.

What I'm going to do Billy...is try to recreate all my main templates from scratch using X1b. I'm thinking maybe even my old project templates created in X1a may be the issue too as well as the drum track templates themselves. I'll get back to you on this...now my interest is piqued.

The transport and engine get grayed out when it is added. X1 won't load projects fully that contain Kontakt 4--can't load the plugin, yet I can load a new project and insert it just fine and THEN the same 8.5 project will open up just fine. I mucked about with templates trying to recreate 8.5 ones in X1 with some success , but that is a ridiculous requirement as far as backward compatibility with your own product...and still leaves me with nearly 1000 "legacy" projects from prior versions of Cakewalk which I can't use in X1. The question really becomes...why not learn a brand new DAW at this point since my Cakewalk proects are now utterly incompatible with Cakewalk?
