C'mon guys, call it what it is - our $4000 hardware doesn't physically match the UI  

Yeah that's it. Let's call it what it is.


The fact is not being upset or rant anybody but let's face it : our $4000 hardware doesn't physically match the UI.


Impossible to work around? Of course not. But... if the majority of users find it "acceptable" then what surprise will we get next?


Did you know Roland won't put out any new ARX board?  Am I shure, I don't work for them, so no. Is it possible? 99%.... Yeah, nobody care. 3 boards is more than enough.  Nobody uses them anyway, since we have a lot of soft synths, etc etc. The ARX expansion was a great selling point for me, as well as the Fantom. 


We have to tell when those things happens. If we simply accept this we will be at the bottom line of the priority list and the VS won't even be compatible with Sonar in 5 years!!


Stop trying to protect your product and let's be togheter and admit there are problems.  


Do people at Cakewalk deliberately messed the knob layout? I firmly believe they don't. But if we say we DON'T LIKE THIS, next time it won't happen.  That's all.

Anybody experiencing with X1B an error when closing X1 ...and the vs 700 hangs ...until i restart the vs 700 system ?
Only happening with X1 B , rock solid daw ....not happening with 8.5 ....no matter buffer size and how heavy or not is the project .....let's say i have it 90% of the time !!

Ive had all the faders stay the same untill I reload X1b a couple of times this has happend now.

Also everytime I close X1b it takes longer for the faders on the faders to drop down than it normaly would in 8.5.3 its a bit strange but not cause any actual problems

Ive kept both 8.53 and X1b on my system just incase of any problems :)

I was useing X1 for the first time trackign tonight with no problems just puting some guide tracks down so I can get some drums done tomorow so fingers crossed all goes well :)

Dyonight, my friend, I am not having this problem... It happened to me a very few times, also with 8.5... But everything is working but the Fantom VS...

To me, Fantom VS is like a baby vulture... I know it exists but never saw one...

Obviously, i got my crashes here but nothing really unexpected.

Here, Sonar is 32bits, Win 7 64 and, indeed, ARX isn´t working... But I don´t have any board installed either... Is that relevant?

I can isntal some, i have two in my Fantom (keyboard)...

I am not in front of my studio PC right now, and I don't remember what is the messages content (about ARX)...

And life is going on... One of my compensations here is my wifes brand new Mac Book Pro asking for reboot all the time when connected with her iPhone... Nothing is perfect!!!

So sad...

The baby vulture is back!!!

I did what you suggested Ryan but the problem remains the same... "UNABLE TO READ/WRITE DATA".

What now?

Try checking a few settings.

- Make sure the VS-700 is powered up and connected before inserting the Fantom VS Editor (obvious I know but people miss this sometimes ;)
- In Edit > Preferences > MIDI > Devices, make sure "FANTOM VS (VS-700)" is selected under both Inputs and Outputs. If these are not enabled then data can not be sent to/from the Fantom VS hardware.
- In Edit > Preferences > MIDI > Control Surfaces, make certain that you do not have any control surface plug-ins sending or receiving data to "FANTOM VS (VS-700)". If so, delete or reassign so they do not rob data from this MIDI port.
- In Edit > Preferences > Audio > Devices, make sure you have "VS-700 FANTOM VS" selected for an Input Driver. (Probably not relevant for the error message you are receiving but this should be enabled nonetheless)
- In the Fantom VS Editor itself, go to Setup > Setup MIDI Devices... and make sure that the your Fantom VS Input and Output ports are assigned to "FANTOM VS (VS-700)" and that the Device ID is set to "17". If this is not configured correctly, the editor will not pass info correctly to the hardware.

Keep in mind that with most of these changes you will need to completely remove the Fantom VS from your project and re-insert. This needs to be done from the Synth Rack (don't simply delete the tracks routed to the Fantom VS). If unsure, just close your project and create a new one.

Start with that and let me know how you make out.

I did everything exactly as you mentioned Ryan... (including power on the unity, kkk)

So you still receive the same error message, "Unable to read/write data" when inserting?

Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit SONAR? Likewise, which option did you choose in the Fantom VS installer (32bit or 64bit)?

Try running a test to see if you can get the Fantom VS hardware to work without using the Fantom VS Editor.

You can actually access the sounds without the editor by using the Instrument Definitions. We have instructions on how this is done here: http://www.cakewalk.com/S...reader.aspx/2007012927

Set up the Fantom VS as explained in Section 2, with a separate audio and MIDI track (not by inserting it as a Soft Synth). Make sure you enable input echo on your audio track.

This is an important test to see if fundamentally we are dealing with a hardware problem or an editor problem. Let me know if you are able to generate audio with it using this method.

Also, as an aside, do you have the ability to call in without huge international rates (such as Skype)? We may be able to get to the bottom of this faster over the phone.

Thanks for running that test. Try doing this:

1) Launch SONAR and go to your VST Plug-ins menu
·         In SONAR 8.5 and earlier this is under Options > Global > VST Plug-ins
·         In SONAR X1 this is under Edit > Preferences > File > VST Settings
2) Make sure your VST Scan Folder(s) are set properly to scan where you have installed your Fantom VS plug-in
·         For SONAR x86, the default location is C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins
·         For SONAR x64, the default location is C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins
3) Place a check mark next to both "Re-scan Failed Plug-ins" and "Re-scan Existing Plug-ins"
4) Click on the [Scan VST Folders] button and let the scan complete
5) Afterwards, close SONAR completely and wait a few moments
6) While holding down the SHIFT key on your keyboard, open SONAR
7) When prompted with the message "SONAR will now personalize your user settings", make sure to click [OK]. If you do not get this message, try closing SONAR and repeating step 6.
8) Create a new project and insert the Fantom VS by going to Insert > Soft Synths > Fantom VS
9) Test it out and see if you can get playback

If that doesn't work, check your personal email. I sent you additional information.

Even before all the effort  and willingness in helping me, by Ryan, We didn't get Fantom VS working on my system... I got the sounds through the intrument definitions, but thats all...

I did all things he suggested me, step by step, but I stilll have the same result.... Unable to read/write data.

After an entire year, that was the first time I heard the fantom sounds packed in VS 700... I can even use them now, but not in an appropriate way. 

The sad thing is, even with all Ryan's good will, We end up with no real solution.

Just reporting facts here.

I'd schedule a call so that we could try to sort it out together over the phone however I can't dial out internationally.

You mentioned before that you could call in via Skype or something similar? Would you still be willing to give us a ring?

I'd love to spend some hands on time trying to get this worked out. At this time you're the only person I have been unable to get this working on. Either one of us is miscommunication something, or there actually is something wrong and it should be addressed.

For the record, we know your Fantom VS hardware is not defective (it does generate sounds with the Instrument Definitions), we just haven't been able to get the Editor to send/receive MIDI.

I think we're giving up too soon if we haven't spent some time going through everything together live.

In any case, let me know what you think.
