How many inputs do you need? How many inputs go you need with preamps for microphones?
Do you have a laptop or a desktop?
How much money do you have to spend?

Answer those questions and it will narrow down your choices.

Thanks so very much, everyone, for all your suggestions and advice.  I only want to record with one mike, and I also need MIDI inputs for my Roland A-80, so as you can see my needs are minimal.  For those that also have the Edirol  UA-25EX, I amj encouraged to plug mine in and see just how much latency I get.  I really would like something that has Firewire, or even better, USB 3.0, but the Edirol is what I've got, so I might just unpack it over the next couple of days and give it a whirl.  If I experience too much latency, I'll sell it, save up my pennies, and get one of the interfaces you all have suggested.  Thanks very much again for all your help!

Is there a recommended audio interface for producer x1? I have sight set on maudio fasttrack because its all i can afford at moment, and also because it comes with protools LE which Ive wanted to check out for  while now.  Is the fasttrack work ok with producer, or does cakewalk recommend another one?.. Also I have AMD chip in my notebook.. is that bad? (for recording i mean)?
thanks

Hey there...I just went through this 2 weeks ago and went with a focusrite Pro 14 and was extremely unsatisfied with it. I took it back to guitar center and returned it for an M-Audio Fast track Ultra and am VERY Pleased. I wasn't going to go back with m-audio due to the fact that my last card (an maudio fw-410) had not had a driver update since November 2009. But even though this Fast Track Ultra retails for 449 I got mine from guitar center for 279.00 plus tax. great deal on a card that has on-board DSP effects and can record up to 6 channels at once. two of those are S/pdif so if you wont be using that then 4 tracks simultaneously.

Good luck

Is there any other difference though b/w fasttrack ultra and fastrack regular, considering that i dont need any more than one xlr and one 1/4" input?

Try and consider that some time down the road you may need/want to have additional capabilities from any gear you purchase. You may grow into this sound-card very rapidly, you never know. It is a lot more card than what you need at this time but it does fit neatly within your price parameters; so why wouldn't you treat yourself to "the nicer" card?

That being said, you can get the FT for about 100.00 less than the ultra IIRC....and you give up a great deal along with that 100.00 savings. DSP on-board effects, channel inserts for outboard processing and more....

Whatever you decide, I hope works out well for you!!
Cheers

Mark

I got mine yesterday. I have to say that I am really impressed. I tested some older projects I had. One was a track with around 50 tracks (all audio) and around 30 plugs (mostly IK s3 stuff). It was running smooth at 48 samples and a latency of 1.1ms. I run 24/44.1 bit/sample rate. I then loaded the Star Trek TNG song that was done here on this forum. I had roughly 30 synths and over 30 plugs including a convolution reverb. It still ran at the previous setting but was not perfect. I backed it down to 128samples and back to normal.
